ECU map, Revo Stage 1 with SPS.  Very happy with the results, still sedate when you want it to be but opening it up! so much pull

Good work!  :afro:
You won’t look back.
Always seems criminal to me that people don’t tap into the reserves of the turbo and engine to release the full potential. Not just for racing about in crazy mode but more for the added mid range thrust in daily driving which is so satisfying to use and makes the car so flexible.

Warranty and insurance are 2 reasons

Not the case. The AA who I was insured with I was paying £452pa, they wouldn’t be able to cover so cancelled and got Admiral through Meerkat and £407!! Their stages were up to 25% increase or 26% and above. Well it was only 24.5%!

As far as warranty is concerned, I have funds to cover so I took that in to consideration. If suspension fails for instance then nothing to do with ECU.

I thought about it for quite a while looking at the risk factors and costs and that’s why I went ahead.

You’ll see I could have got insurance cheaper but I added legal cover

Warranty and insurance are 2 reasons

Yep, fair points but I never found insurance an issue and neither have I blown an engine up
Joking aside though I do fully get the warranty issue. Mind you many many mk7’s are out of the three year period now and if I still had my Ed40 it sure wouldn’t still be on factory software by now

Third reason would be value, or rather devalue.

Does a stage 1 impact economy?

Insurance shouldn't be a major issue as long as you are upfront about it with your insurance company. It's only really if you try to hide it from them that you could invalidate your policy.

Personally I wouldn't do it to my car while it's still under warranty, and it would put me off buying used if the car had been mapped previously.

Who is going to know it was previously remapped unless it has bolt on mods too?

In my experience fuel economy (on a manual at least) is slightly improved due to the extra torque. To me it was always the extra mid range grunt that made remapping worthwhile, the extra top end was seldom used.

Thrash it and the economy will be worse, naturally. The injectors will be throwing in extra fuel when in max attack mode. In normal 50/50 driving you should see a slight improvement due to the extra boost over a wider band making it easy to be lazy with the engine.

All the tuning companies I looked at say the remap improves fuel economy. As said above I had a good run out and getting good mpg, putting in eco mode and doing a motorway run I would say not as you are using lower revs and the main power boost is higher up. But if you drive around town in sport mode I think it’s going to be a little poorer depending on how you accelerate.

If I couldn’t afford the fuel I wouldn’t have got that car, I’d go electric, maybe the new E-tron RS GT, fancy that but didn’t want to spend that amount of money on a car lol. So I’m very happy with my Golf and the Revo tune.  I don’t have to commute on motorways so poor mpg was always going to be some thing I’d have to live with for the fun of the car. Up to now I’ve been getting 250-280 miles out of a full tank. At the moment I’m still sitting on those figures after filling up just before getting mapped and I’ve done about 100 miles so far with a mix of eco and manual sport mode.

Some companies won’t touch it but as you see from my quote I’m very surprised and very happy.

I figured I have a year of warranty left and a year until next service. I can get map taken off and put back on by Revo dealer, they say it’s not a problem. They specialise in Audi/VW/Bentley so I have every confidence. If I was worried I couldn’t afford an issue if not covered by warranty then I wouldn’t do it. I also don’t intend to sell for a long time yet, ad as Exonian says, not physical sign that it’s done and if de-tune if an issue. That engine was built for that power and it’s been tuned right back for emissions and to be lower than the R flagship, it’s a capable unit.

Ah yes, you did say about your insurance company not accepting it. I was thinking more from a perspective of shopping around at renewal time.

I don't recall exactly where I read it, but I do seem to recall that remaps do leave a mark on the ecu for newer cars that can still raise a flag with the dealer, even after the map has been removed.

I’ve just had a look. See image below. Still very early days but those are the ave consumption since refuel figures from the car. Not sure what that short one is on the right as that’s only 1 mile, odd! But the rest are my full tank returns and the bar to the right of the short one is so far after map. Maybe remind me in a few weeks and I’ll post more data but for now looks on track to be about the same. Unless I modify my driving and take the fun out I’m happy with those numbers and about a tank a week. I had diesel for 20 years and now time to have some fun 😁

I thought that about the mark being left and the service manager and tech did say, come back before any warranty work and we will take off and put back after at no cost and they can hide it. Now I don’t know for sure and can only take word for it, when I went they had a GT continental, RS3 and RS4 in the workshop, I have to have some trust they know what they are doing and they have been in business for a long time, not just a pop up. But as I said, personally warranty not an issue for me and having read all trouble getting sunroof work done on this forum seems VW will hold out on anything anyway lol
