Brakes c’est possible?
« on: 02 April 2021, 19:56 »
Hi Guys
I just got new suspension fitted to my Mk6 GTd which obviously means I’m compelled to drive much faster 🤣 at all times.....
Only ‘problem’ is the fairly ordinary brakes now seem just that, perhaps even, not that great. So,-
If I stick with the standard 17in Seattle alloys  what’s the biggest discs we can put on if I go the Porsche
caliper route and should (could) we go Cayenne rather than Boxster.
All tips and tricks gratefully received  I have tried to ask the internet search Gods but to no avail.

Well well, not much info here nor reply’s from a Vag brake specialist.....
In case anyone’s interested I’ve bought a refurbed 312 set up and on next day off (Bank Holiday) I’ll fit it and report findings.
Obvs got dough burning a hole in pocket should anyone have spare Porsche/Brembo set up that will fit under 17 inch alloys they want to get rid of.

Last I read 312mm were the biggest you could go.

Change to 18s and you could go up to ~320-340mm depending on calliper and carrier set up.

Cheers Slick, I’ve got the 312’s on my Ibiza Fr with its 16 inch wheels and spoke to one of the guys at Vagbremtech on Thursday who seemed to think we’d skweeze 345’s in the Golf...
I’m going to fit the 312’s (along with vbt’s braided hoses) next day off to see how it works/fits with a view to going bigger and Porsche with my bonus burning a hole in my pocket 🤪.

The braided hoses turned up today from Vagbremtech. Excellent looking bit of kit and great service.

I’m sure like me some of you think “yeah but how much?” Whenever you see articles or vids on brake upgrades regarding weight increases and the difference the weight makes to the way the car drives and most importantly what difference the brakes make to stopping.
Well I’ve decided to do a weight compare of the bits I’m putting on the car with the bits I’m taking off for the 280/312mm conversion.
I’ll also do a (not very scientific) cruise control 60 to 0 distance comparison once the new set are on.

So, to kick off the genuine Audi 312 discs (from TPS) weigh an astronomical 8kg each, well 7950 grams to be precise.

I’m on nights this week so I’ll do the standard 60/0 standard brakes on my way home early one Morning.

More to come......

Probably don't need to say it, but make sure you bed them in properly first eh

You should feel how heavy the 340s are on mine, think they come in around 10-11kg

I need to get a hobby or a life but here’s some not very scientific nonsense so far,-
I took the Golf to work the night before last and on way home did a couple 60 to zero stops on seafront.
Not locking or setting abs off I stopped her in 135 feet I recon I could get it down but this was
Second attempt and fairly gentle.

Last night I took the Ibiza to work which is like my ‘van’ in as much as she’s full of my tools and probably
Weighs close to the Golf, both are similarly Tyred (Golf Pilot Sport 4’s and Beezer PS 3’s) and as mentioned
elsewhere she already has a TT type 312mm set up, post work I went home via the seafront.
I only did one run cos she pulled up in 121 feet or an entire bus queue of people difference......

More to come when I get round to bunging the upgraded Golf stuff on, stay tuned zzzzzzzzzzzzz 🤣.

PS
Really not scientific but......
From the Ibiza ‘test’ I drove 5 mins to early morning offy to buy grog and lottery tickets
before going home and I thought “I know let’s see how warm those discs are”. Funk me
they were HOT
