Hi

Yes you are absolutely right Fred. its not going to be a sub-40K car at RRP.

Before the Mk8 disappeared, I wrote down the prices UK v Germany. Obviously, as already discussed the two spec are poles apart and UK getting a far more loaded car.

So just for interest here are the mk8 prices for performance golfs before they went off sale (Basic list price, not really worth a comparison but interesting)( but its interesting to see the difference basic currency conversions)

GTI
£39,815  v  40,095Euros
GTI Clubsport
£42,270  v  46,480Euros
R
£44,550  v 54,880Euros

So from my thinking basic UK GTI before options will be £42-44K if the German version is 44,550Euros

Ahh, well in that case why not replace one with a Golf R estate or if ground clearance is an issue then maybe a T-Roc R?

Surely the replaced wheel has its own warranty?

Under VW’s new car factory warranty, items replaced during the warranty period are only warrantable up to the expiry date of the warranty. From the warranty T&C’s on VW’s website;

’Any part which is replaced becomes the property of Volkswagen. Any replaced parts are covered for the unexpired period of the vehicle warranty.’

https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/owners-and-services/my-car/important-information/warranties-and-insurance/new-car-terms.html

I'd ask citizens advice if that is actually UK legal tbh.... I don't think it is.

Consumer Rights Act 2015 I believe will effectively state that the repair was not completed....no matter what VW might say.

The German VW approach is to sell bare bones and let the buyer add what they like.

VW UK tend to make a much more fully spec'ed base item with a few optional extras.

The German one is really stripped down, probably a good 5-7k of items will be added to a UK base GTI.

Its definitely going to be north of the magic 40k RRP, making it even more expensive. No way can i see it coming along sub 40.

Thanks all, some really good info and opinions there. Sounds like I wouldn’t be disappointed with either, maybe I’ll have to try harder to get a longer test drive in both to see what suits me better though. As discussed I’ve also considered an S3 but it would have to be the saloon as it looks much better than the hatch. Doubt I’ll go that route though as I’ve always had VW’s and will probably stick with what I know!

My current car isn’t actually a GTD it’s an Alltrack, so same 184bhp engine but with 4Motion. It a great car and suits me well for a lot of things (towing, winter driving, light off road etc) but as I said before is let down a bit by the engine. A 2.0 Tsi engine would have been perfect I reckon! It’s part of another dilemma as well, I’ve got another Mk7.5 Golf, a 1.5 GT estate, so which one do I chop in against the new car?! Both are good cars and have a few difficult to find extras. The 1.5 is actually better to drive (even though it is slower) as it’s a petrol, the seats are more supportive and it handles better. But the Alltrack is a bit more special and a very rare car - rarer than a TCR or Clubsport S maybe?! Obviously in the case of the Alltrack rarity probably has more to do with the fact not many people wanted them!!

So I think I’d better go and blag another test drive or two, probably the GTI first as I think it’s more ‘me’. Many moons ago I had a Mk2 8v GTI and after 6 months got bored with it and bought an Integrale. After another 6 months the Integrale itch had been scratched and the very same 8v GTI was back and I kept it for 4 years! Hopefully that won’t repeat itself or things could get very expensive!!

Cheers

Those on here that previously owned an S3 (mk7 era) reported very hard suspension.
The later ones (mk8 era) are much better for ride.

The Black Edition S3’s look really nice, far more classy than a Golf.

Scrap that! Just noticed that Euros price is for a far more basic spec than the UK would get, I.E 17" wheels, no tints etc. Looks like we are looking at at least £42k then

I'm still on 1899 and haven't seen an OTA update of any kind for a long time.

How can I check if my privacy settings still allow OTA updates?   I haven't changed anything (but, as we all know with VW software, that doesn't mean that no changes have taken place!)

The very quick way is to look at the online icons at the top right of the screen.
So long as you don’t have the little head wearing the ‘in disguise’ hat you should have sufficiently relaxed settings to allow VW to locate and send new software to the vehicle.

@SRGTD - typical VW!  :angry:

Hmm interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Just spotted this article regarding pre-sales and starting price stated is 44,505 Euros which equates to just over £38k. So, I'm wondering if they will actually try to keep the base price below the £40k in the UK.

VW pads or aftermarket??

Im gonna guess the pads are moving in the carrier.

Try reversing slowly and gently braking to a stop, then drive forward and brake, is the noise happening then??
