Title: 3 years away, looking for advice
Post by: Chicken McFat on 22 July 2013, 13:47
Hi all.  I hav'nt been on here for 3 years or so.  I had a MK4, currently driving a Corsa Ecoflex, but am now considering a MK5 Diesel.  It needs to be good on the miles (and nippy enough) as one of my jobs involves driving every evening and I would prefer it to have some toys, A/C, maybe cruise control etc.  Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Which model had the best performance/milage for example.
I've had a quick look at one today locally, the guy said it was only 105bhp.  I thought they where 150bhp??   :wink:

1.9 = 105
2.0 = 140 or 170

Thanks. Are there any common faults?  which model would you recommend?

1.9 is bullet proof but under powered

140 suffered from chocolate turbos

170's suffered from injector problems (sorted under recall) and can suffer DPF problems

Think that covers it really  :smiley:

Ill let you guess which one I recommend  :tongue:

Considering GT TDI. Like the look of the trim.

Soooo....I'm still looking and have at least made my mind up that I'm after a MK5 GT TDI but am struggling to find a decent trim.
Now, the GT TDI seems to have a pretty basic looking cabin, and I've been told by my boss (who owns a MK5) that the SE model has a much better trim.  Can any one tell me if this is true please?  Is the SE available in GT TDI? And the difference between the two.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah buy an Audi S Line. Much better looking car all round  :grin:

I found the MK5 was not a step up in terms of quality over my old MK4

Hi again.  Just been to have a look at a mk5 TDI 2.0. in silver, '55, 61k.  They're asking for £5500, although might be pretty irrelevent as it'll be on the never never should I get it.
Could any one tell me if there are any common faults to look out for and if this year and model is actually worth having?  I made the mistake of not asking questions when I had a mk4 and ended up with a 2.0 8v petrol (awful car by the way)
Any help and advice is greatly apprciated.
Thanks.

Hey Chicken McFat
  I live in Ormskirk & own a Black GT TDI 170.  56plate.  Mine came with Leather, Sunroof etc good spec
Standard form is rapid enough for me & you can spin the wheels without trying to hard

Got mine in 2011 with 30k on it & at 62k now & have never had the DPF light on (except when starting)  :smiley:
Though the shortest distance I drive is to Liverpool & back M62 /M57.  If you don't do a lot of motorway, I would not get a 170 for the DPF needs.

My only issue was the Oil pump cracked?!  :shocked: lucky I was in a cark park so it wouldn't start & no damage done

What are your driving at the moment, I will keep an eye out for you.

Jay

Hi Jay, thanks for the info, probably going to settle for a standard 140 in the end.
Currently I'm in a 58 black vauxhall corsa ecoflex.  You'll have no trouble spotting me, I'll be the one with the brown paper bag on my head  :laugh: :laugh:
Bought the car after owning a mk4 2.0 8v, got burnt by that thing.  I could actually watch the fuel deplete as I was driving the car. So got an eco car instead, which has served its purpose, its cheap to run, insure and tax but I have grown to hate it.  After a bit of investigation, a mk5 2.0 tdi will cost almost exactly the same.
The only problem I might have selling my car privately it has some outstanding finance on it, so finding a buyer who will agree split the payment between me and the finance company might be difficult.  Heres hoping.
