Title: Finally done it...
Post by: Garza on 15 December 2010, 17:48
... bought a mk5 Golf GT TDI 2.0 140

so far I've got 200 miles to 1/4 tank... compared to my 350 miles on a full tank in my mk2 GTi 8v. Certainly is a more comfortable car, especially like some of the mod-cons... like efficient heaters, heated wing mirrors, see me home lights and knowing it is is 5 star EURO NCAP rated.

All that aside though, I still prefer the drive of the mk2 GTi, much more involving and fun.

But seeing as it's winter and I do 2000 miles a month, the new buy is def the sensible option.

That is all

Shoulda got a 170 instead

Only joking! Good buy but you still got the mk2? It looks in good nick?

I considered the 170 BHP, but out of my budget really.

Yep still have the mk2, sat on my drive at the moment... will garage it once I get my own house. It's in reasonable nick, currently on 201,002 miles  will be my weekend project

170's have "fun" with DPF's and the insurance is £££ v's the 140's

Enjoy the car, they're a cracking motor

DPF's are the one reason I have ruled out getting a 170 when the time comes.

Don't the newer 140's come with a DPF too now?  :undecided:

Don't 100% know, I've seen so many different options I'm still trying to decipher when or if there is/was a cross over.

Congrats on the car by the way. Great choice on every other choice except the DPF issue

Mine doesnt have DPF. Certainly is a very good car and sensible buy. Considerably more economical than the mk2 GTi. Still haven't got 'used' to it though... still in love with the mk2 GTi lol. I'm sure the mk5 will grow on me eventually

I think the newer CR based engines do    Apparently the DPF system is a lot more reliable........ :undecided:

Cheers!  Went with the 170 as I knew it would put me off trying to make it go faster     It feels just as quick as the old Goof in a straight line and in the twisty stuff its light years ahead

It took me a while when I first had the MK4.  I test drove the MK5 but didn't get on with the fit and feel of the interior.  As a car it was excellent

The DPF system is more reliable in terms of consistent emissions and fuel consumption, however, it needs time to activate, and also time to run regeneration cycles, so short journeys do it no good.

Yeah my 4 mile run to work doesn't do it any favours  :lipsrsealed:

I do tend to take it for a thrashing on the weekends mind and I do the odd long trip for work so I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'll be ok  :lipsrsealed:

Although I own a 170 I really like the 140, the later pd140's do have dpf but most don't.

If I was buying a mk5 I'd go for the 140 time after time, if they made a mk6 GTD 140 I'd gave bought that too :-)

It's pretty nice averaging 600-650 miles on a tank with the mk5 compared to 300-350 with the mk2.

Happy 2011

Post by: jonnyb on 22 February 2011, 09:46
you get 600 miles per tank  :undecided:

I get around 450-500 depending on how ive been running it.  Saw 570 when i did a cumbria to devon to london to oxford road trip lol.

Why do i have poor economy :(

I drive like an old man at a steady 70mph on my commute to work... weekends I'm a little bit more heavy footed

I get between 450  and 500 out of a tank on my 2.0 TDI sport 140 (which I think may have been chipped as it is very quick) thats with 10 mile dirve to work and back I have seen 600 ish on long runs

1 Year of motoring with the mk5 Golf GT TDi now... times flies! 20,000 miles later, I've definately grown to like the comfort and economy of it compared to the mk2 GTi, though I still miss the 'fun' factor. I have made a few little mods... front armrest, black VW grille badge, front votex splitter and R32 style rear lower bumper.... also a TDI-Tuning box which has improved BHP/Torque/MPG, so will def consider a remap in the future. Am certainly happier with the styling of the car now.
