Title: '89 Driver
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 25 November 2010, 18:34
oh dear, i've bought another one

Atlas grey driver, non sunroof shell  It also comes with the added bonus of a manual quick rack (have been looking for one for years), widetracked front, g60 brakes and the subframes have been powdercoated. The g60 arches weren't part of the deal though so they will be taken off, i'm not a big fan of them tbh

A better pic to come at the weekend when its had a damn good wash!

Paint looks good in that shot. I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.

Sounds like a clean enough base :afro:

You gonna stick with the bigger front wheels to try and get the power down better  :lipsrsealed:

Cool. Have you got anything planned for it?

it will be the new scene craze next year, you'll see

the plans are basically to use it as a shell donor for my track car

a slightly better pic from today

have also started the stripdown. Its pretty much rot free, just a bit on the os sill and behind the rear arch to sort. The shell looks straight as though, was loving taking the deadening off the roof with no sunroof

3 month update

not much has been done recently, just been prepping the shell, removing stuff etc. A corrado being broken locally tempted me to get the petrol disc cutter out and remove it's tunnel so that needs fitting as well now!

Its a 3 out of 5 spanner rating. Just involves drilling through the spot welds without putting a hole in the skin underneath! Its thin metal though so quite easy as spot weld drilling goes. The seat rails on the other hand are quite tricky as its 3mm'ish thick and you can't bend the metal as you go

i may have to have a go at getting it cut out of mine as i have already taken the back seat mounts out. cheers for the info

well not really, £110 for a few bits of metal that you have to weld together anyway but it should sell pretty easy once i have used it.

but for me not having to lay on my back for days scraping underseal off, welding the seams, replacing the sill and painting it all = priceless

I got the tunnel cut out today so no turning back now!

Have also painstakenly taken off 75% of the underseal, all the tricky bits are left to do so thats gonna take a while

You can really see the difference in the tunnels in that shot. Gotta pop round soon and have a butchers, plus haven't seen you in aaaages!

What is the thinking / idea behind changing the tunnel :undecided:

Brings the cable shifter up higher towards the wheel.

Isnt it meant to help stiffen up the car aswel? hence why G60's had the same tunnel. May be wrong like   :undecided:

I think this is probably more the point.
Title: Re: '89 Driver

3rd reason is it gives more exhaust clearance for the tall block and looks a lot more oem than a patched in tunnel to an mot tester! plus if I ever go flat floor in the future it will help tuck the exhaust up

but the main reason is it looks cool, obviously

very awesome work with cleaning the underseal off fella... looks like new now!

knew you would like that bit  Yep thats the factory primer looking all shiney. On the last car i used an angle grinder to remove it but that left bare metal and a layer of fine dust over everything in the garage so went for the blade scraper technique this time. It doesn't really take much longer and leaves a much nicer finish. Will be better for rustproofing as well

The tunnel is almost there but the golf shell is a bit more radiused whereas the corrado is squarer in some places so its taking ages to match them up perfectly

I haven't put in that many hours in the last month, but have got the tunnel welded in now

It fits better than I thought it would, just have to patch in a bit of floorpan at the front and get my hammer on in a few places and its done, ready to be stitched in when the rest gets done

The remaining underseal is still laughing at me though

You on a mission to get it rolling so you can move it to your new pad?

New tunnel looks brilliant!

Not really, might as well do all the noisy stuff here so I don't piss off the new neighbours

It will be nice to get it back on its wheels though. Still got to tidy up the tunnel a bit, add holes for the corrado handbrake cables, sort out surface rust, raise front turrets, remove underseal, stitch weld everything then paint floor, then can put the suspension back on hurrah!

I think I have decided on a colour though

what do you think?
