cutting springs??
« on: 27 June 2006, 15:06 »
is it a good idea as i really want to lower the golf a bit aswell as the corsa for the next meet, im having replacement shockers and springs in case i mess up but is their anything i should be aware of before i go cutting away?

it seems like the best part to cut the springs is at the top as they are wider where at the bottom of the spring its smaller so i dont think they would fit after,

any help will be great, thanks

If you want the springs to jump out of their cups then by all means cut them, personally i like the feeling of security, knowing that my springs are going to stay where they are meant to be. Suspension kits were developed for a reason, and cutting springs was condemned by everyone for a good reason too.

Get some lowering springs, if you cannot afford them now, then wait till next paycheck.

You CAN cut springs!

But what you have to do and this rather specialised, you have to heat up say half of the top circle and bend it to suit the top cup. Now this also involves using a heat dissapating putty because when you heat spring steel it loses its spring or tensile strength.

Unless you have a rare vehicle with springs that aint made anymore then this is not  worth doing! Also not a job to be done by any amateur!

A set of lowering springs can be bought for as little as £60 all round. So why bother?

You can only cut the springs on a Corsa as they're not real cars

well dropped the front of the golf about 60 ml and its looking sweet and sunday il be doing the back about 70 if i can get away with it, anyway was easy enuff to da just took the springs off and measured 60 ml up then cut and put em back on, no bangs or rattles and handling has improved! and car looks lower, only thing is now because the front was so easy to do i think im going be having problems with the rear but oh well at least i got a spare set of shocks and springs to fall back on!
