Thank you both! I was aware of a 'get out of jail' process with this, but as I was at the shopping centre, easiest solution was to go an obtain a new battery.

I did feel uneasy leaving it unlocked (even for a few minutes), so I didn't hang about.

I do recall hovering the key around the area where the normal ignition key goes, but nothing seemed to work, maybe I was just not patient enough with it!

Having a spare battery to hand is a good move!

Pretty sure you have to hold it against the plastic

Yes, you're right. Had this problem thanks to the other half thinking that the battery warning meant there was plenty of time. Nope. At 99.8% depletion it warns you then unceremoniously dies.

Manually entering the car, you have to be careful you don't chip the plastic on the painted trim part popping it off. Took a bit of force to pop it and expose the keyhole.

There is an indentation on the steering column where you press the key to start the car. It's roughly midpoint and you'd likely not notice it unless you were looking for it.

Digging up an old thread here.

I have recently picked up a GTi with keyless entry, I have tried what has been suggested on here by locking with the fob and then touching the handle. With one of the keys this will not work, with the other I managed to get it to work twice on 10 attempts. Any suggestions please?

Never worked for me either.

It only works on newer cars.

When the key battery is dead you have to place the key in the small rectangular pocket on the centre console, next to the automatic handbrake button. You can then start the car normally. Know this from first hand experience.
