Title: Possible Coolant Leak/Water pump issue MK6 Gti
Post by: drokkeh on 27 January 2020, 13:41
Drove to work all last week with no issues. Parked up Friday night and left it all weekend.  Went to work early this morning.  As soon as I turned the igntion the water level/coolant warning appeared on the dash with a beep.

Opened the bonnet and my coolant resevoir level was about 2cm below min.

Topped it up with some G12.  Drove to work and back and seems ok so far.

Any advice on where to check for leaks?  Not noticed any leaks under car yet.  No idea if water pump has been changed in the past before i bought it (service history doesnt say so).

At 57K miles.

what year is it?
my water pump was leaking at 30k and i had to have it replaced
mine is a 59 plate apparently they are all crap from this year and I had to have a revised pump fitted from later cars, wasnt a cheap job either
started as a barely noticeable drip to losing quite a lot of coolant

Left the car all night with coolant topped up to maximum.  Drove to work this morning.  Coolant level hasnt changed.

Will keep an eye on it.  I'm suspicious though after owning GTI's for several years lol.

If it continues to lose coolant I will take it to a VW Specialist near mine.

Water pumps are kniwn to fail. Coolant tank can fail and leak.

Noticed a coolant leak on my Mk7.5 at c70K miles. Coolant light was coming on around every two weeks.

< Got the leak diagnosed for £100 from an independent in NW London (Finchley VW quoted £250) for diagnostics. Problem was as expected - leak from water pump / thermostat housing.

> Independent changed water pump and thermostat housing for £1190 inc VAT. Thought this was quite pricey but labour rates down in London are higher than up north. Parts were c£450 of the total cost. Bit the bullet and got it fixed. Did a long drive up to the lakes and back last week and all good so far.

I know that the MK7 R's have a known issue with the waterpumps and Thermos and even when you get it sorted, it is only a matter of time before it goes again. Main reason I wouldn't entertain a MK7 R and went for the Ed35.

Would it be the same for GTi's too?

Have a watch of this, explains it better than me. (Time stamp 15:19)

@drokkeh you may want to double check your radiator, my mk6's mysterious disappearing coolant was down to a small hole in the radiator.  Pretty sure it was only leaking when the car was at temperature and pressure, hence no obvious pink colouring to my garage floor when parked up.

See the photo in my post here.
