another newbie- looking for a mk7.5
« on: 18 September 2026, 10:10 »
Hi All, as the title suggests, I'm now on the hunt for a GTi 7.5, having last week sold my 997 Carrera S after 10 years of impractical ownership-I'm gonna be a grandparent next year, so a GTi seems a practical solution!. This doesn't mean I've turned my back on ridiculous motoring, as I still have my TVR in the garage.  I've been an active member on both PH and the 911 forums(same username) and am very hands on keeping the cars on the road, so look forwards to sharing expertise with you all. If anyone has a low mileage example (preferably a performance version) they want to move on- I'm interested!.

Welcome  and some nice cars you have/have had there.

If you’re still looking there’ll be some nice examples here owned by members if they could be persuaded to part with them.
Doing a bit of networking in the mk7 section would be my suggestion

Thanks chief, just over a week ago, I managed to get a 19 plate in red  (i am told red cars are faster, and it also matches my wifes rollerskate!) 1st impressions (coming from a 911) are very favourable. so nice to connect my phone to the in car gramophone system and have a useable boot space. Its also a bit nippier than i was expecting. So far I've had all the wheels off and found the trailing edge of the sills to be just losing the paint protection, so that got 4 coats of paint/stoneguard etc and I'll keep an eye on it. next job will be to treat the rear suspension components which are surprisingly rusty for their age.

A GTI always looks great in red!
Congrats

Was it a private purchase?

Probably over 90% of buyers wouldn’t notice the issues underneath until the car went up on the MOT ramp so it’s a good job you’re hands on and used to dealing with such issues. The suspension components aren’t unknown for getting a little corroded and it certainly sounds like your car has been exposed to some bad roads and salt. It doesn’t take long for these parts to start looking untidy underneath, they don’t make ‘em like they used to as the saying goes. Then again I’m old enough to remember 1970’s cars that rusted after a few years and there’s still plenty of those about that are now lovingly cherished (and worth a fortune!)

Good to hear the car doesn’t disappoint after the 997, admittedly you lose that pure driving focus but the GTI fares well as a daily driver that can hold its own.

Glad you found a 7.5. The rear suspension arms corrode quite quickly. After treatment it is worth looking at golf dave post on the mk7 guides as there are vw add ons to help protect underbody parts. The supposed aerodynamic improvements are a bit wishful thinking but from experience the protection is good.
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.
