A GTI always looks great in red!
Congrats

Was it a private purchase?
Probably over 90% of buyers wouldn’t notice the issues underneath until the car went up on the MOT ramp so it’s a good job you’re hands on and used to dealing with such issues. The suspension components aren’t unknown for getting a little corroded and it certainly sounds like your car has been exposed to some bad roads and salt. It doesn’t take long for these parts to start looking untidy underneath, they don’t make ‘em like they used to as the saying goes. Then again I’m old enough to remember 1970’s cars that rusted after a few years and there’s still plenty of those about that are now lovingly cherished (and worth a fortune!)
Good to hear the car doesn’t disappoint after the 997, admittedly you lose that pure driving focus but the GTI fares well as a daily driver that can hold its own.
