Hi all, I’m new to the Forum.  I hope other members can advise me on the subject of adding power steering.

I own a 1985 Golf GTI mk2 8v which was modified, strengthened and prepared for regularity rallying by a previous owner.  I've just driven my first rally in the car with an expert navigator in the left seat.  We came 4th, out of 10.  Amazing!

I would like to have power steering fitted as it would make driving the car much easier especially on rough winding roads and manoeuvring around cones and doing tight turns on special tests.

Researching on the web, I’ve found that it might be possible to fit the power steering rack, pump, pulley, hydraulic lines, reservoir, etc.  from a later model Golf.  For instance, currently on ebay there is a complete kit of parts stripped from a 1989 Golf GTI mk2 16v on offer.  Would that kit fit my ‘85 8v without modifications and extra parts?

The alternative is to have the current manual steering converted to electric power steering.  I’ve found the company EasySteer in Corley, Lancs who specialise in PAS conversion kits.  However they would need the original steering column to convert and the work takes about 3-4 weeks to supply the kit.  Alternatively they can take the car and carry out the conversion but not until May 2023 – at the earliest!

Does anyone have a '85 mk2 steering column for sale?

Any advice and help from anyone who has practical experience of this subject would be much appreciated.

Cheers
