Project tid
« on: 27 October 2010, 17:57 »
So.. Project tid (not a typo) started as a pure accident.

My best mate Saf came across a colleague selling a P reg MK3 TDI.  The car needed an MoT and looked to be in fairly poor condition.  It did however have a really good spec (full electrics inc sunroof, 14 alloys, p/steering etc) and a nearly complete VW service history.

He paid.. £99 for it

Now it was supposed to be a runabout, just a strong old tractor that we can muck around in without worrying about scratching it or knocking it etc.

First thing Saf did was to service it.. He took off all the breathers and EGR valve too and gave everything a good clean.

The problems started when we got under the car and discovered the rear suspension was shot.  Well I say problems, I mean the modding really.  Saf came across a set of coilovers at a good price and thought sod it, I'll buy em..

So we lowered it.. then we thought, well it needs some decent rims now... so we got the 17's, tyres and a fitting kit...

Then.. well you can kinda see where this is going

Anyways long story short, we met up with Dean (another member from here) who was breaking his Dragon Green 5 Door GTi and we took nearly everything we could to make it look like a GTI, inc arches, sills, door trims, lights, lenses, spoiler - even the beesting.  We also took both front wings :)

So Coilovers on, wheels on, trim on.. then we thought well the paintwork needs doing now as really it's a pretty good car underneath and there are just bits and bats letting it down..

Oh wait, before that we took it for it's MoT.  All it needed apart from a couple of bits of welding under the sills, was 2 x rear wheel bearings, a track rod end and front pads.  We used my mates ramp and fitted it all ourselves and got the car passed the same day :)

So anyway, we left the car with our mates Captain and Harry to start prepping it for some paint and minor repairs.. meanwhle we located a nice Highline leather interior for it.  The lad selling it had a BMW 530D so me being the wheeler dealer (my fav show by the way lol), I did him a Stage 1 Remap, and we got the interior for a good price ;)

The problem then was that the leather we bought was black, and the Golf had a beige and grey interior... so we then located a good breaker in Sheffield (Matt) who had a Colour Concept in Black that he was breaking.  So we bought everything we could out of that.. I bought the seats for my wife's 6N2 Polo (that'll be another thread I think) and Saf got the door panels and carpets and every bit of black trim he could find to convert from beige to black.

I let him use the Colour Cocept door panels as they seem to have a nicer leather finish than the ones we got with the highline interior...

Now that we had everything we needed, it was back to Captain's place this weekend and we worked flat out from Sunday morning til late at night to install the interior, carry out minor repairs (window wiring needed soldering in the doorshuts etc) and let Captain and Harry finish the painting.

As we never intended for this car to become such a big project, we never had the good sense to take some 'before' pictures.  But just try and imagine a green MK3 bacg of sh!te with rust patches and a cracked rear bumper, and some original 14" rims..

Suffice to say, we're really chuffed with the end result as we did a lot of the work ourselves.  I know to most people it's just an old car, but to us, as teenagers growing up in the 90's these were the cars to have and it really took us back.

The best bit is we did all this in around 4 weeks.

Next plans are to remap (chip) it and just damn well enjoy it

I've told him he can never sell it.  And if either of us dies first, we get to be buried in it

Mileage is around 102k mate, and yup £99 is what i cost him initially... but it's put him in well over £1k now - but it's not always about the money.

Still posting pics, just bear with me.

Well done lads....looks an amazing job and very well done too. It looks like you have spent hours and hours on the project and that now looks like a proper GTI but I do really like your TDI badge on the front grille. Thanks for posting the link for me as it's good to see why you travelled a measly 600 mile round trip for the parts. Top job chaps and all the very best for the future with her
