Stupid service schedule
« on: 29 July 2022, 21:29 »
So today my car decided to tell me it needed 1 litre of oil but its OK to keep driving.

The first oil change is in 1000 miles and the inspection service is 1500 after that.

I seem to remember this from my last golf... Put oil in only to have it chucked away, get the oil change and in a couple of weeks it wants the inspection service.

Both of my paid for services used in one go pretty much.

Is it just me or this is crazy?

How many miles have you done Fred? Didnt realise that it actually told you if the oil was low( i just occasionally look on the stick) i had my first service last month, only done 5000 miles, no oil top up needed in that one year period.

Just over 15k.

The mk7 used to b!tch about low oil but this specifically says add one litre.

The service will be the first one... And if I can get away with it, the second one too!

Are you on longlife servicing?
Could they not combine the service and inspection to use one credit then put you on annual for the next service?

Even the mk5 used to alert you when it needed a litre of oil. Mine had the valve stem seal wear so this occurred about once a month after I’d passed about 100k miles!

Surprised people aren’t checking their oil levels more frequently, the EA888’s do use oil. About a litre every 10k seems ‘normal’. A litre of the correct Shell Helix is only about £20.

If it were my car I'd just add 100-200mls or so to get me through to the service.  That should be enough to eliminate the warning message.  The "add 1 litre" would just be the difference between low and full marks on the dipstick.

My 7.5 hasn’t needed a drop in 3.5 years.
I was meticulous in following running in guidance, I think this probably does make a difference.

A litre every 10k isn’t much though.

As I said, my Mk7 GTD's used to do exactly the same thing - just before each oil change they'd tell me they needed oil... which I'd fill up and then the dealer would tip away...

I'm going to show my ignorance here so please bear with me.

I have a 130 mile drive to the airport early morning tomorrow and will drive home on Sunday night.  My Clubsport has asked tonight for a 0.25 gallon (1 litre) oil top up but the shops are all closed.  Great timing as always.

It says I can drive on and really I don't have an option but will it be OK to drive 300 motorway miles and get the oil from my local dealer on Monday?

Don't want to screw up and put the wrong oil in either but I think I need Shell Helix Ultra 504 00 0W 30.

I think the VW spec is 504/507 but I don't know if that matters!

Any and all advice appreciated!  Cheers
