No idea on the current production, I have the feeling that not even VW know what is going on.

But I was told last week that any new orders going in for high performance Golfs is looking at a lead time of 60 weeks minimum.

Best bet if you’re taking delivery of a GTI anytime soon would be to immediately order your next one so it arrives just as your warranty runs out!

Based on forum members experience, probably not even VW have a clear picture of car production at the Wolfsburg plant………. Some of the issues affecting production will be due to external factors, but it doesn’t paint a good picture of the so called German efficiency.

By contrast, VW’s Kariega production facility in South Africa where Polos are built for RHD markets (including the UK) seems much less affected by the current supply chain issues than the Wolfsburg plant. Based on discussions over on uk-polos.net forum, UK forum members who’ve ordered a Polo GTI have been experiencing typical lead times of around 7 months, and those times include the (approx) 6 week ocean transit from Port Elizabeth to the UK.

I know you were half jesting here but my dealer actually said when I picked my car up in June he will be contacting me in 12-18 months to put the next order in. I was going to get a clubby next but the price is over 40k now so god knows what it will be in 3 years time. On that note, you would think that the gov would increase the luxury car cap to match all the inflation the robbing buggers. Soon a Ford Fiesta will be in the luxury car bracket

I'm almost eighteen months into my mk8 and did actually think about going to order its replacement the other day!

However I'm keeping this a bit longer and ordering a milk float to go with it soon ish.

Keeping the threshold at £40k is an easy way to increase the amount of revenue, so can’t see the £40k figure being increased any time soon, especially as the transition to EV ownership means an increasing percentage of the total vehicles on the road will fall into the zero rated VED category, impacting the amount of revenue raised through conventional VED.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the gov.uk website used to make reference to additional VED on cars costing £40k+ as being the ‘luxury’ VED rate. Interesting to see the word ‘luxury’ is no longer used, implying it’s no longer considered to be a luxury tax.

What’s the EV choice/shortlist Fred?

Mini electric. We have a lot of minis in the household already, seemed like a logical choice as it's not my car!

To my eyes that’s the perfect choice.
Still my favourite EV.

I don't need it to be a massive barge and that narrows the field quite a bit. Range not really a problem, just going to use it as a local run around.

Which spec Fred? Lease or purchase?

I think the middle option and a colour. Probably pcp.

Ahh, level 2, same as I was planning on going if I ever got round to it (which I didn’t).
Best value spec but a shame the £1500 gov’t grant has vanished.

How? I know we have all waited/are waiting a substantial amount of time for our cars but this seems far too long. I waited 12 months to get mine and I ordered 4 months after you. Is your dealer being shady? Telling you it hasn't been built when in actual fact it has, and they have sold it for far more and then just ordered you another one telling you it is still waiting for a build week. I hope it comes soon for you man!

Yes I’ve definitely had my suspicions about that

The car’s chosen spec can have an impact on lead times, especially if options have been selected that are semiconductor-dependent.

Some forum members over on VWROC.com forum who’ve spec’d the Harman Kardon audio upgrade will be looking at a lead time of 15 months or longer by the time they get their cars, provided their unconfirmed build dates don’t move out any further. One VWROC.com forum member ordered in March 2021 and currently has been given an estimated delivery date of Feb 2023 .

Title: Re: Golf 8 GTI production line ?

Very optimistic I would say as I’ve waited 17 months and still no sign of a car

I ordered in Feb ish 2021 as well and mine just landed in the country off the ship. They aren't building them in order unfortunately as it depends on spec and what's available at the time. I know mine had issues with seat material and wheels. They also pushed as the CS45 ordered in front to get them out. There is a bit of pot of luck involved unfortunately

If an EV is over £40k, although it is exempt from regular VED, is it still subject to 'luxury car' tax for 5 years?

No, EV’s with a list price over £40k are exempt from both regular and ‘luxury’ VED - from gov.uk website;

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £355 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.
