It allows you to use certain models of Samsung phone as your "key" to open & start the car instead of using your actual key

It works by using a secure contactless chip in your phone acting as the key - just hold your phone against the door handle to open, and pop it on the phone charging tray to start the car. Convenience.

Drawback is that it presently only works with certain Samsung phone models, not other Android brand phone and not Apple devices as well

Use *certain* phones as your car key.... check your phone is on the list compatible list - it uses specific features on newer phones only.

Now, I love a bit of technology, but, whilst in a perfect world it sounds great…. Would you trust your phone and leave the house without a car key?

I can just imagine getting back to your car at the supermarket and it won’t unlock because of your phone, next thing you know you’re on the bus with your groceries wishing you’d saved £215

Knowing VW software that's a strong possibility!

The unlock on approach is flakey as hell...

On the other hand, in case you don't know, the security chip on the phone will work even if your phone is flat...

Couldn't see it on VW UK, but here is the up to date list of compatible phones from VW Germany

Thanks, actually didn’t know that about the phones.

Disappointing to hear about the approach unlock, that’s one new feature of the mk8 I was really looking forward to. Hopefully it gets sorted with software and not a hardware issue. The most annoying think about my current keyless is that I’ll be putting stuff in the boot and my missus will have to come grab the keys out of my pocket because the doors are still locked and the sprogs are being impatient!
