Title: SOME LED SWAP PICS, not the best pics tho!!!
Post by: kells on 01 December 2007, 22:31

Thought id pop these pics up, some of the later ones are bad pics as was taken using a camera phone and with the new LEDs been so bright i just could not focus on them at all, but trust me in real life they look awesome and super bright!!

SEE MY LATER REPLY WITH UPDATED PICS.. BLUE MAF SCREENS !!

Got these clocks instead of the standard blacks

front cover and needles off

dials off, strange as these are 1 piece and made of metal, my standards were a 4 piece kit.
tried all sorts to remove the white plastic to get to the lcd displays, it didnt wanna know, these are sealed units on the late spec dials, my black ones had bolts so you could remove the lcd displays!!

Warning lights cover

removed the cover, these are the SMD's i have ringed in yellow, my old black clocks had normal twist bulbs here and could be replaced easy, these Cannot be user replaced... these are also under the LCD displays somewhere.

Unfortunatly i never took pics of the work i did, but here i have marked in yellow where i drilled holes and installed the Blue and UV Leds, i soldered these to the 2 metal strips on the back of the dails (the inside strip is positive)

20th Anniversary Clocks in car with the mileage reset from 68k to my current mileage of 90k

here they are lit, really hard to take pics of them with a crap camera phone so im sorry for all the next pics!!
they have more UV colour in person and that dont show in any pics for some reason, it just shows the blue

Dimmed them a bit to try gain a bit of focus...didnt really work

Heater controls / rear heated screen switch

Rear ashtray, first pic is of it unlit, and as its so hard to see what the hell is going on in the second pic of it, the light goes under the white dot, and basically illuminates this and a panel that lights the inside of the ashtray

Electric Window and Electric mirror switch

Sunroof switch, i had to take this with flash on as they are so bright it just looks like a dot if not hahah

Got the Cabrio 3.5 RED head light switch on its way, had to get this from the main steeler, was expensive but needed it and with the front / rear fog option...for those that dont already know, the normal switch cannot be fully converted as the green on some of the logos is painted on from the inside, iv had a spare switch in bits and seen it, u can however use nail varnish remover but if yout not careful it will take off the black too, which u wont realise till u switch on your lights...

should be here any day

thanx for the comments, i forgot to mention, on the clocks on a mk3 you have a green filter that runs along the top of the clocks (near the 2 standard bulbs) this pulls out and i replace with a frosted clear strip, this gives a even light transfer.

seriously though these pics do not do it justice, it looks fantastic in person, the dials look superb, when i first plugged them in (it was like midnight haha) i actually said out loud "WOW" haha

i got the bulbs from a place in Germany called BlauerTacho, these guys do them for all cars although when u get them they are just bags of leds with some not so great instructions which in all honesty i didnt use, it was kind of figure it for myself, not hard really at all, their site is here: http://stores.ebay.de/BlauerTacho4u

i also got some leds from this guy, they were 99p for 10, but they didnt come with resistors(the german ones did)
these were handy for spares incase anything went wrong:  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120130699544&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=002

Title: Re: SOME LED SWAP PICS, UPDATED PICS AND DIY
Post by: kells on 13 December 2007, 23:15
HERES THE UPDATED PICS

not the best pics as taken on a crap camera but here is a bit of a DIY on how to change the MAF/MILEAGE LCD display colour on late spec dials which are sealed and have NO FILTER

First remove this plactic cover from the circuit board, theirs just 1 screw in the top left as you look down on the dials (before you do this you need to remove the needles and the dial faces, very easy the faces just clip off, and for the needles use a kitchen fork)

Here is the reverse of the circuit board, the yellow highlights 13 solder points which hold each of the LCD screens in place, you need to DE SOLDER all 26 of these pins, be very carefull doing this and remove all old solder or the pins will not budge, take your time!!
theirs some plastic clips too but they are childs play :)

then you are left with the two bits seperated

Now you can see the inside of the circuit board, the top highlited bits are the pins you have just DE soldered and the bottom highlighted bits are the CHIP LEDS which as standard are green, these are tack soldered on and are a fiddle, i had to use some jewelry pliers to hold them in place as i re tacked on the blue chip leds, in the pic is the blue ones iv re fitted...not a bad job if i do say so myself :)

here is a pic of the plactic bit you have removed (this is the bit that has the pins on it and the glass for the screens, iv highlighted the pins that go through the circuit board which you have just de soldered)

The illusive Chip Leds can be seen here, iv put these next to my keys just so you can see how tiny these are... you need a steady hand to work with these, they are plasic so burn if the soldering iron touch them..so go steady

now we put it all back together in reverse of how you took it to bits,  be VERY carefull when you attach both the platic cover and circuit board together as the pins can easily miss their holes and bend, this is why its important to remove all old solder

We are now BLUE, but as you can see they are so bright i cant get focus at all, trust me these are bright as hell and look amazing and super clear to read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  well worth the hard work

here they are using the flash, you can still see how blue they are with the flash on

cant get focus on the displays at all, this is with them dimmed a little too, you cant see the mileage and time on the pics but can in person, they are superb

Took this with the flash turned on just so you can see the displays better

Red headlight switch :)

sunroof toggle switch

But at the mo im rocking the later type Button switch (thanx to the salvage mk 4 clocks for the red chip leds)
these use the exact same type chip leds as the ones iv used in the LCD displays, i had to use red warning ones out of some mk 4 clocks i got hold of :)

Lookin good :)

will get some close up pics of the dials with my camera when i get a mo, this is a wicked mod and i cant belive how good they look, non of the pictures do any of this justice

Hi Dan

i havnt at the moment mate but iv had sooo many people ask about this im actually thinking of taking it to bits and showing exactly whats been done to achieve it..

i never really though about it when doing that as it was the very first bit i did, it was the bloody MAF LCD displays that were always on my mind as these are the late type clocks and have no filters.
I had my old clocks in bits and those are Soooooooooooooooo easy to do, like in ten mins and that includes getting them out of the car!! hahaha

im just in the process of collecting leds, i want to try carrying out a few extra mods and lighting in the car but you can wait to see that...

one thing i want to do with my heater dials is use a red and blue bulb to try and distinguish between hot and cold but i wonder if it will work

yes that can easily be done, i played with the idea but decided it looked too much, sort off a bit ott for what i wanted.. i just made sure the blue and red dots at the bottom of the dial were both blue and red when lit as they are in standard form :)

That was the concept for me from the start..to keep it a factory look but not if that makes any sense. i could have easily done the ashtray too but i want to keep that to be white light when i open it and not say blue or red...a mk 4 does not have blue or red illumination in the ashtray and its the company mk 4 i based this mini project on hehe

my therory is anything is possible and just do whatever you want to suit your needs

is that like the one in the mk4??

i dont have it the my mk 3, but do in the mk 4

i guess it will be possible, it will more than likely have the same chip leds as what iv used here for the maf screens and sunroof kit

if i had climate control believe me it would be changed to blue one way or another

nice work keels!

I want to do this, replace all my backlight stuff with red!

I replaced the main interior light, the festoon bulb, with a red led but it was no where near as bright as the standard white but the red led gives such a cool effect. Thats why I have my maglite! :p

I will just take all the dash fascia off and take all the controls apart and learn that way and see how it needs to be done. I have 96 mk3. If I do it I will post pics etc here   ;)

Cheers all,
LL

seriosly tempted to do mine! how did you no how to change milage illumination etc?just trial n error?

thanx man

well the early type clocks are easy to change the maf mileage screens but the late type ones use special leds and are a real hard job, was told it wasnt possible but i just desoldered tho whole thing and went fpor it, as u say trial and error, but i hope this post opens the door up for others to do the same

i actually did all my switches with a old solder iron which was like a flat headed screwdriver, wasnt ideal, i got a new solder iron for the maf screen thing tho as that needs a very fine solder iron, i payed 8 quid for a weller one with a pin head tip

was VERY delicate work was the clocks but well worth it, look even better in the flesh

upload the pics first to www.imageshack.us

(tick the box that says REMOVE SIZE RESOLUTION BAR first)

then it gives u loads of links to use

i use the one that says HOTLINKS FOR FORUMS (1)
copy the whole link and paste on here, bingo

i got a few UV leds from a mate in the industry, i mixed them with the blue,  UV is invisible to the eye, u will be ok with just blue tho trust me iv done a few since then and they are perfect on their own

Nice work Kells, I think you have inspired many to do the same!

For my dash I will just replace the 509t bulbs with red LED 509t from ultraleds.co.uk. Easier that way.

I want to do my heater controls, cig lighter and headlight controls but its too complicated. I took off the heater controls and it look so fragile. Knowing me I will just break it! Do you reckon you could explain (with pics maybe ... plz ... lol!) how to wire up the led's for the heater controls and headlight controls.

The cig lighter is just green filter so will just take that out and use red led or get red filter.

LL ;)

Post by: kells on 01 March 2008, 00:37
Thanx for thne compliment dude :)

the heater controls are very complex to get them how mine are, would be hard to explain as it is pretty involved, theirs a standard bulb which actually has a green filter around it, now you could remove the green filter, it just pulls off, and replace the white bulb with the colour of your choice, now i must stress you wont get it as bright as mine coz as standard they dont light up too good round the heater controls, but that is the easiest way to make a change..

to do the heater controls how i have u need to be pretty good with a solder iron and have balls of steel, but it can be done, jus depends how far you are willing to go.

now the headlight switch is also VERY complex, u need to take it to bits completely and inside theirs green paint on all the logos, u need to remove this using nail polish remover, i really must warn u tho, rub too hard and u will not only remove the white logo surround paint but also the black!!!, and its very very hard to not mess up like this, and u can hardly get access as u need to use cotton buds

u can buy the mk 3.5 cabrio switch at the dealer which illuminates red but its bloody expensive at 70 to 75 quid!!

unluckily the two parts u wanna change are quite involved bits

all the rest is pretty easy to do if you are handy at soldering

i am gonna work on some ideas for people once i get the chance

Post by: LazyLunatic on 01 March 2008, 01:13
I noticed the green plastic filter thingy in the heater controls. I will check out and see how many leds I need and replace the existing and get rid of the filter. As long as its red, im not too bothered. I guess will probably leave the headlight controls then for now!

Cig lighter is just remove filter and replace bulb with red LED ...

Ill get some before and after pics up if i can. Also i will get pics of heater controls and how to do it the easy (ish) way. Thats if i get it done!

Cheers Kells,

LL ;)

right, i need a shopping list
What bulbs and where do they go can be swapped straight forward for LED's and which one's do i need to order.
does the steering wheel need to come off to remove the clocks...??..if so i beleive i need to change the screws that hold the airbag in....right or wrong..?

You dont need to remove the wheels to remove the clocks....i drop my steering wheel as far down as poss undo the screws holding the clocks and they ease out
and if your swapping just the bulbs you need about 10 for clocks and heater dials and they are called r509t which seem best from ultraleds.co.uk (http://ultraleds.co.uk)

so clocks and heater dials dont need soldering and 10 will do both yeh...??....i wanted to do clocks blue but they dont seem to have them in that colour

so all other switches need soldering (leccy windows, front and rear ashtrays, sunroof etc) ???

I never checked the colour options!! and 10 should be fine... but as stated the switches need soldering...but the front ashtray is the same bulb type and the rear (on mine at least) isnt illuminated

i'm gonna do the dial/clock bulbs and heater dials myself cos they're straight swap (trying to source some blue LED's) . it's just the switch soldering im gonna wimp out on. altho i'd quite like to have the speedo box colour changed on dials

every single one of mine were soldered in, all as in my pics....

all depends on the look you desire and how far your willing to go etc...

i have  a mild case of OCD (i think / have been told) so went the whole hog, did 90 percent of the work in the early hours of the morning in the dark etc...
done a few other cars since too, all in the early hours also

takes no more than 10 mins a switch, and cost for leds is pence, so if anyone is paying people to do this job dont let them take the piss, infact put the price up on here so i can see

been stopped randomly at traffic lights etc and asked by other golf mk 3 drivers how i did mine, etc..
they really do look fantastic in the flesh do mine

Hey Kells, going to get LED's 2nite maybe (ultraled.co.uk) but thought i'd check and see. How did you wire LED's to power supply? Did you solder on some wire and then soldered this to the power? Cause the legs can't reach anywhere. I would just use but thought i'd just check before I ordered cause you might have a better solution.

LL ;)

btw, i reckon i have some mild form of OCD

I was just going to solder them into the nearest loom. i.e ashtray/mini-draw/change pot has its own loom; also the cig lighter has its own loom. Just wire the LED's into those. Unplug them and solder the LED's into the top. Just need to add wire to the legs of LED's so they can reach. Seems the easiest way to do it and well its practical I guess.

LED + wire should be OK. Its just an extension of LED legs. Just wondering whether their is an easier/more practical way of joining wire to the legs than soldering.

Cheers

yeah your kind of right, make sure whatever you do, insulate all bare wires and legs or they will short out if they touch eachother

I've just bought some of these off ebay (well the seat Ibiza ones) with 146k on, my car only has 75k on it.  How did you reset the mileage?

it is, well just time consuming but if you read the guides in here then you will be ok, just remember to get 12v 3mm leds then you wont need to solder a resistor on the led thats what iv been told by my electrician mate. theres 2 types 470 OMH or 330 OMH? im not sure what the guys on here have used but someone will tell. Im confused at what colour shall i do mine? i was thinking the mk4 look, red OR blue back ground with red OR blue display but the digital display numbers in red OR blue  i learnt this when i was a kid and i used to have them hand games, used to end up opening them up and turning the clear filter (i think thats what it is) other way round that used to make the back ground dark and the car or the object clear, and this link is absolute BRILL http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2772569&page=1 (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2772569&page=1) OMG when i saw that i want to do it. now lads the question is what do you boys think? OTT? i hope not. what colour should i have the leds to show the clock? and what colour should i have the display?

hope someone can help me out as i have been waiting for 2days for a reply but looks like no1 wants to share there secret  :undecided:

thanks to all for help out

Bit of a bump as i'm currently doing my LEDS.

How do you light up the red part of the heater controls? I never saw a bulb for this when i took
them apart.

im an electronic repair engineer, i could do some for people if they supply the dials and a bit of cash... and to there own spec colours to

so am i .....and i'l beat his price, (only jokin'...i wouldnt have the time to so it, it took me long enough to do my own)

ive done me mkII, it is a refreshing change to see them all blue, especially the electric window switches.....

ffs - not you 2 as well! Me too! What is it wi electronics techs and golfs???
 LOL!

And modderz - the LEDS - if 12v, should have a current limiting resistor already fitted, but make sure - as they will just go pop ;)

(why is the fooking reply box jumping up and down as you type? GRRRRRRR!
