1.8GTI Turbo or 2.3 V5?

 i think the days of killing your turbo are long gone, leave that to the old skool rs turbo/cossie/renault5 turbo brigade, these new 20v turbo engines are far superior units as a whole, and even if your turbo does go bang (and i think youd have to neglect servicing, and crank the boost right up to do so) or gets a bit smokey (seals) its not gonna be that dear to get a re-con unit, how many cars are these used in throughout the vw/audi/seat/skoda range? quite alot! i dont think cost is a major issue if ya fit a new one yourself,

I don't know about that mate, i can't see turbos being that cheap. I agree the new turbos are probably much more durable, but they won't last forever.

i paid for a recon turbo on my rs escort and fiesta years ago i seem to remember they were only about ?275 exchange, not bad considering the hammer they were getting!!, think the new ones should stick it a bit longer, i think if you have a turbo every 3 years your doing well, and i wouldnt grumble havin to pat probably ?350 evry 2or3 years for the performance you get they are well worth it

180bhp 1.8 turbo,  173/235

170bhp 2.3 v5,        162/220

Don't forget the V5 is a heavier car, power to wieght ratio and all that, I seem to remember Jeremy Clarkson doing a thing on Golf GTI's and had a little race going on down a 1/4 Mile strip he used a range of Golf's from all MK's all standard. The first across the finish line was the VR6, 0.2 Sec's behind that was the 1.8T(150) and I think a MK2 16v was 3rd, the guy's driving these car's were probably experienced racer's so regardless of power, I think its all down to wieght and the driver
