Title: Emergency SOS display icon on!!
Post by: Mr.Edge1974 on 01 June 2019, 10:50
Morning all

Had the emergency SOS light up.on my car last night. Had an update added on Wednesday by VW and all was ok on that day, then Friday it came up again, but didn't come up at all on a 7 mile trip in the evening?   Have to rebook at VW to be looked at. Not sure if there is a reset option somewhere or a facility to disable the SOS facility? Not very happy at present

Thanks all

Interesting. I’d like to know the answer to this one too. Collected a brand new GTI yesterday and I’m getting intermittent warnings. The light next to the button is mostly green but occasionally goes red.

What’s the tech behind this system? - does it work using your mobile?

The car has it's own sim card.........somewhere??????

Might go red when the network isn't present.

Does anyone know how this feature can be disabled???  If it can be I would like it removed........or does anyone know where I can pay for it to be disabled?

I haven't had my mobile connected.  I've booked into VW Thursday next week. Bit annoyed this wasn't rectified on Wednesday. The Roof LED goes from green to red when the error occurs, clears itself then the issue begins after about 5 minutes.

The SIM is built in to the car so your own mobile being connected won't make a difference. As far as I know it cannot be disabled as it's for the new always connected stuff and it's also for emergencies.

...Which isn't great if you live in a semi-remote area like me where the sim keeps dropping signal. I can live with the light changing from green to red and back again all the time, but the constant audible and visible warnings are a pain. Wonder if they can be switched off whilst leaving the sim active? - I've looked in the menus but can find no way of doing it

Drove 7 miles to work this morning.  Not a single message or error regarding the "SOS". Shame the SIM can't be disabled. Will.see what VW say again on Thursday

Page 180 of the manual states that:

“In order to permanently deactivate Volkswagen Car-Net functions in vehicles with the “Security & Service” or “e-Remote” packages, the “online connectivity unit” must be deactivated by a qualified workshop at your request.”

Not 100% happy with the system myself, from a Big Brother point of view, although I’ve had no malfunctions or warnings, but I guess it’s another of those things that could save your life, given the right (or rather, wrong!) circumstances.

Thabks for that "Talk torque" as long as it doesn't effect the satnav and it's functions I will be happy I'm happy to manually call the services on my phone. Just cant bear my music being interrupted with the SOS verbal message!

Absolutely fantastic thanks so much.

I collected mine 6 weeks ago and when I was being given the handover chat and I learnt about the sim card I asked for it to be removed..........the technicians at Chester apparently said it couldn't be.......well now you've pointed out this I'm on my way in this week to get it removed.

I don't care if it affects the sat nav, it shouldn't but clearly it will affect the traffic live report's,  as without speed camera alerts the sat nav is a waste of time....yes I know I can link waze and others and upload them as POI but really it's easier using the Tomtom as I can move that around all my cars.

I will update this thread later in the week when I've booked a slot with Chester VW

It’s not a physical SIM card, it’s an eSIM, which is why it is very difficult to remove. The receiver chip also talks to other circuitry that will need to be disabled.

Why anybody would want it removed though is beyond me.

You're right I wouldn't eant anything removed just want tje Emergency SOS icon removed I'm happy to dial VW emergency services on my phone. Every time the alert has come on the audio and dashboard I've not had a customer rep speak to me via this facility.

And just noticed the sat nav isn't working "Navigation database not available "!not sure if this is linked to the "emergency SOS"

Interesting.....thanks for the information.

My reasons for wanting it removed are mainly it's too much big brother.....your every move can literally be recorded and monitored.....whether VW do or do not I don't know but I suspect it's one way they can track how their cars are used to enable designers to downgrade mechanical components if "the typical customers"  just potters along........no idea if this happens but one thing is for sure if that's data is available someone will use it to suit their needs.

I also don't like the fact it's been forced on the end user, ....I don't need an sos feature nor do I need to be able to access the car remotely via my mobile.....if I'm that interested in my last journeys stats I can always remember them or even walk back out to the garage.

Years ago I attended a week long training course ( I'm a control system engineer)  about microwave transmissions from mobile phones.....they were analogue signals then, and the upshot was that the microwave radiation given off my mobiles was amplified in a car.....the transmission  signals reflect off the metal surfaces to amplify the users exposure.....I guess this is what the installed sim is doing in the car. Should I choose not to use my own mobile phone in my car I can drop it into flight mode......I have the choice......this VW system takes away that choice.

Not too mention  as the OP mentioned to have the system alarm when it's lost it's signal is just plain ridiculous

............you did ask

I think people are over reacting to something they know little to nothing about. Research exactly what it does and how it works and then decide if you want to tamper with it.

try removing the SD card and re inserting it, I highly doubt it is linked to the SOS feature.

When jacking the car up to change the wheels the car alarm activated. I received both a text and an email within 5 minutes from VW making me aware that the car had been moved/lifted. Is this linked to the sim card?  I thought it was excellent to be notified and so quick.

Yes, it's part of the 'safety & security' package that became standard from MY19>.

The SOS system is called "eCall" and its an EU directive effective for all new vehicles from 31st March 2018.

https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/security-and-emergencies/emergency-assistance-vehicles-ecall/index_en.htm#shortcut-2-compulsory-for-new-car-models

One of the requirements:

If the eCall system fails, you'll get a warning indication

You are allowed to disable it under EU directives...

The eCall system does not transmit your position except when the air bags are deployed by an accident.

You do have of course a VW CarNet system onboard which is different. Full details of VW's scope of data collection and your agreement for their use of it are contained in the documentation of the car.

Being a German company, the easiest way of disabling any potential data gathering is simply to write to VW's GDPR controller and tell them that under GDPR you revoke their right to the data. They will jump, they will jump high and fast.

BTW I hope that you don't have a android or apple phone - those things record far more about you than VW ever would...particularly if you use certain apps and you cannot stop that from happening short of not having a smart phone.

I was going to write all about that, but I thought it would fall on deaf ears, so I'm glad you pointed it out.

Having worked with Google in their data & maps innovation development team, the data they have on users (particularly Android users) is off the scale. Personalised and non personalised data. The data VW could collect about you from an eSIM is minuscule and insignificant in comaprison.

The person worried about it being Big Brother is stuck in the 1970's it would seem, worrying about Big Brother watching, and radiation concerns from technology. Then actually having the audacity to waste a dealerships time & money to have something removed from the car that is clearly shown in the brochures and literature and features, and calming they were forced into buying it....

I'm not in the least worried about 'big brother' - As you say, tech companies already have the means to harvest data without relying on vw.

To be fair, I've only has my car for three days and the warning lights and voices are already driving me mad. I live in an area with patchy mobile signal, and the warning comes on literally every time I drive the car. I can live with the system not functioning all the time - There is a red/green light above the mirror to tell me if it's active or not, therefore I don't need the audible warning, nor the repeated reminders and amber lights on the dash. If there's a way of doing it, I'd get them turned off and rely on the light by the button.

The system is great in theory, but clearly designed for people who live in an area with a faultless mobile signal. I wonder which network the built in sim is trying to access?

Interestingly, the manual itself mentions personal data and suggests that you may want to ask your passengers if they are happy with that, so the problem is acknowledged by VW. I’ll wager that this system will be changed, in future models, with the ability to switch off all or part of it.

Of course its acknowledged.... under GDPR it has to be... and this is a German car and the Germans love a bit of data privacy :D

Afternoon all. Dropped the car of this morning for the SOS issue. Had a call this afternoon that the external aerial base unit has a fault in it so will have to be
Removed and replaced. Part is on order and should be fitted next week. The irony this morning the SOS warning didn't even present itself or the return journey home .

Well so far so good 3 weeks in now with the base aerial unit changed no problems. No problems have come up at all so am overall happy with everything.
