Hello guys, its been a while but I finally have a dub again!
Got myself a S reg 1.4 polo, for 300 notes. Pretty happy with that
Its not the quickest but its not bad, but it does feel like I'm 17 again blasting around in my first car, ahhh those were the days!
anyway, plans, I'm going to matt black it as there is a bit of rust around but mostly surface. The obligatory collies for slammage and some white 14inch steels. Thats it I think. *plans may be subject to change!*
Here she is when I first picked her up:

And a couple of hours later:

Cheers peeps!

not bad that for 300 girlie
if the rust is all LOWER half then only paint that bit, two tone it  a nice satin or summat :undecided:
-
Hmmm I knew my plans would change! not a bad idea, but Im still thinking matte it, but I am liking the nice shiny black :undecided:
I'm well chuffed with it, it's the newest car I've owned, I now have power steering PLUS electric windows!! All mod cons eh?!
-
Looks like a proper bargain and should do you well.
Top sensible purchase.
-
shiney top & matt bottom then .
-
Nice work Cheryl.

-
This'll be what you drive to Volksfest then I presume? £300 is a bargain to say the least :afro:
-
It will indeed. I passed you the other day in it but you were too busy checking out the kids in the skate park!
I shall humor your comment chuff, im not having a half shiney, half matte car!
Thanks for the comments, and polos do majorly rock :D
-
Nice, looks like a bargain!! Same as my girlfriends!! Is it the 8v or 16v?
-

-
Shes got the 16v and it goes 'bloody well' Not alot of difference between that and my mk 3 gti if im honest!
-
300 squid?
Good purchase there :afro:
-
Damn! The 8 doesn't go too badly, but that sounds awesome! (But not for you)

It is Dan, been without the golf for a while too
-
And bang rattle whineee went the gearbox!
So its now feeling sorry for itself instead of having its brand new coilovers fitted
But as a plus i get to drive the mk2 until its fixed.
-
No way, seriously!!! They say the gearboxes are crap on em, they must be right!! :undecided:
-
gear boxes are awfull on em!
my gf was pretty bad, but that was a good n supposedly!!
hope ya get it fixed and back on plan shortly!!!
-
Cheers guys, me 2!
Its might be a good excuse for a cheeky 16v replacement though!
-
you done owt to it yet? Drove my girlfriends 16v yesterday and forgot how much fun it was!
-
Not yet, picking a gearbox up tonight, wheels tomorrow night, already got coilovers ready and waiting. Hopefully this weekend it will all come together!
-
Finally got the polo's gearbox fitted - it took an all nighter after work (not fitted by me, but I did have to sit it out!) but its worth it, so good to have it back!
Got the coilovers on the next day. (that took about half an hour) :afro:
I'm pretty much loving it, cant get the wheels on until I can purchase some rubber and wobble bolts...I'm calling it rat look for now! I've got some pretty awesome tuck going too :smug:

Not sure if it should go a smidge lower on the front?
-
Good stuff Cheryl. Saw you in Herms Golf the other day
-
Cheers, Oh yeah! I noticed you at the very last minute, it must have looked like I was licking my ear!
-
I think you may need some notching to go any lower. My mate has a slammed 6N on 14" Pslots and he had really problems with the driveshhaft banging on the wishbone and chassis leg.
Anyhoo, looks epic
nick
-
Cheers nick, there isnt a lot of scope to go much lower with coilovers ive got, about half an inch on the front and back is as low as it will go, and i have some 13 inch wheels now, will have to see how that all fits together.
-
polo gearboxes....dont talk to me! u need a sledge hammer to get it to select gears on mine at the mo! i presume u got a re-con'd one, fair price?
-
No, unfortunately not, I know just what you mean, first is a fooking pig to get. I paid a fair price for the box, if it doesn't last long (I'm not hoping for too much tbh) then it really will be engine change time
-
I have sprung rather a large oil leak, from the sumpal area.... oops
So, todays plans are to sort that out, prep car for paint, paint car, roll arches and get wheels on. I can feel another all nighter coming!

thats one hell of a day's work
Indeed it was, started 10pm on Saturday and kept going until 9pm Sunday. We managed to get the whole car prepped, new doors in place, and most of it had one coat.
Unfortunately a problem with the paint prevented us getting it all done, we had some paint that we were going to use in the compressor, turned out Hex had supplied gloss black not satin black  It was just a stroke of luck we had a load of satin black rattle cans. So, tonight a second coat is going on most of the panels, but the ones we did with two yesterday looked
We managed to get the wheels painted, which are in memory of the golf (white black and red!), oh and managed to also make the leaking sump worse because it was rotting!
That was a epic 24hours, but not all done as we had hoped, I had a 3 mile each way walk to work today because of it. I'm just hoping it will be worth it!
Fingers crossed pics to follow...
-
Look forward to the pics!!
-
24 hours. that;s dedication
-
Well, the polo is finally home  after another 12 hours of work last night  but hey.

I cant believe that pic leigh posted, i actually thought that would be an orignal idea!! Ah well
Oh and chuff, im sure its going to be emotional, especially for hayman after how long it took him to weld the bloomin sump!
-
OMG!!!... another matte black posted within a week!... exactly what i want to do and exactly what my missus doesnt want me to do! Awesome work.. Saw 6foot6's golf done and that looks great considering how and where it was done.... What was your method and what did you use? I also love wella steelies but cant afford what i want....
-
that is a really good even finish. not always easy with matt and satin paint. looks ace
-
Thanks guys :)

As far as method goes, we just took off the top layer of laquer with 400 grit, and then rattle canned it, two coats.
It was black before so I'm not sure if thats why is such an even finish, but I love the way it catches the colours around it, and the fact its NOT shiny :D

So no primer, makes sense i suppose if most of the black was still intact without laquer... did you have to sand it after to get an even finish... also, what paint did you use?... sorry for all the questions but i planned to do this some time ago and seeing a couple of peeps do it before me has helped me a great deal!
-
Thats cool bud, yeah most of the black paint was in tact, there were lots patches that had to be sanded down more because of deep scratches / rust, but two coats covered it well enough. No sanding after the satin went on, its rough to touch but looks kinda sheeny (not sure if I just made that word up, lol). We just used tradesmen satin black aerosol. Pretty cheap that way too!

same with mine, in the 5 years it was locked up it took a few knocks so gonna have to do some filling and scratch removal too. what did it cost you in total?
-
Awesome :afro:

Cost about 50 squids with everything, i think :)
-
bloody hell, lol
good effort and cracking price too... bargain!!

i did a hell of a lot reading last night on this, mostly on yank sites about home satin paint jobs... lots of pro painters are saying that you will not get the finish you want and because there's no semi-gloss involved the car cannot be waxed and when it rains you will get staining from water marks etc!.... yet people who have done the job themselves say they've had no issues after a few months... i did see some bad jobs though.. its seems the paint of choice over there is rustoleum satin which is their version of hammerite. you'll have to let us now how you get on keeping it clean and how it weathers.
-
Nice read!
Car looks really good mate, i love the satin/matt look, makes the car look soooo smooth, done a good job with the cans too.
I plan to do some satin parts on my new golf, but not the whole thing, heres a pics of my prevoius matt black car:

i found with matt black, after a few washs the over spray gets washed off and just leaves behind a smooth finish, as long as the prep work has been done wel and you've put on enought paint then there shouldnt be a problem
just for the record i just used some matt black rattle cans from halfords << no fancy stuff here

your scort looks cool.... love the white tyre writing. mine might suit that!... thanks for the tips. I bought a tin of satin from halfrauds just to see what its like.. nice finish but its expensive!... like the fact that dubcheryl did it all in tradesmans paint!

Cheers for the comments guys, loving the escort, that looks pretty mental! Stow, what golf you planning on doing it to?
so far the paint has been holding up well, had to wash some bright white bird poo off, that really did show up!
It does scratch pretty easily but seems to come out with not too much trouble :afro:
Will be giving it a proper wash tonight, will let you know how that turns out :)
-
Easy to scratch! easy to fix too though! be good to know how you get on and what you use... stows new ride is here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=156219.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=156219.0)

catching the bushes eh?..... well you cant polish matte/satin anyway really can you so thats good. i wonder if you have to dry it to prevent water marks??
-
Will take pics later, let you see how it turns out :afro:
No need for polishing was one of the reasons i went for satin!

A mate of mine had a matt black Jetta GTI for a while. He used to re-touch it after it was washed, using blackboard paint. The paint becomes the polish substitute.

nice one! matt black is awesome, i've had mine on now for 6 months+ out in the weather and its the same it was the day it was sprayed. i note that it has rarely been cleaned!
i used a 10 cans i think, but i did the bay, which i think used up 2 cans. didnt take long at all, a few hours to mask, sand and spray and its touch dry within minutes!
oh and cant wait to see it with those steelies on!!

Thanks mate, Ive bought a mk3 gti 8v, not 'new' as such lol, not 100% sure yet i want to mix it up with the green that it is now and some satin black, thinking black roof, middle of the bonnet bumpers and shadow lines, leave the rest green, but get the green looking spot on by dong some detailing :D
i found when washing just do it as normal, dont use as much soap nore rub as hard, but dont forget to leather it off
-
Well i didnt do a very good job of washing it, then it rained and made it look better, screw washing it again!
My drivers side leccy window is also now broken
-
Hey Cheryl ! Were them tyres delivered on friday? looking forward to seeing it on the new wheels

I love it with them on, but the rear needs to be raised a tad now, its dropped the ride height quite a bit and catches on everything! The tyres are spot on, just got a teeny bit of stretch to keep it legal  went for 165/55/13's in the end. Comments!?

That's the nuts!!
Looks smart as fook!!
Enjoy driving that around!!
-
looks good Cheryl, the wheels really make it for me! :afro:
-
Looks really sweet mate
-
Well it is too low, thats for sure! Any uneven bit of road and it hits the subframe and makes some hideous noise like the world is ending. Which is a shame because it looks sweet.
We have had to raise the back to stop that from rubbing, and is needing some camber shims to stop it completely. So thats the next thing plus front wheel bearings... Bring it on!
-
Lookin good! My go n get the sandpaper on the girlfriends polo  :lipsrsealed:
-
wicked little polo!!!
-
Thanks drew, was good to meet you :)
Oh and i got one of them little dudes for the polo too
-
Your welcome, was nice to meet you too.
I will stay awake longer next time! :embarassed:
Ah cool, which little dude you get?
What's plans for the polo next? Or is it gonna be
back in a mk2?
-
I got this little dude, thought it was pretty cute!
At the moment plan is to get a straight hub with new wheel bearing on there, and re fit the rear badge. That should be done by the end of the night (fingers crossed!)
Then I've just got to decide what to do with the indicators and rear lights, then for a while, hopefully that will be it, again fingers crossed!
A mk2 would be lush, but I couldnt afford to run one right now :(
-
haha... little dudes awesome!!
did ya get ya hub and bearing sorted?
-
Finally minus bent hub and wheel bearing noise, and its actually quite nice to drive! :D
Just a few more things now, tracking and spigot rings.... then that will be it (famous last words!)
Also managed to glue my hands together while re attatching my rear badge  but looks cool, pic later :)
-
Pic later? Pic Now!
This is one awesome looking polo!!!
-
Hehe, it will never be it Cheryl!
I think you should get my seats to fit yours!
-
And in that case how much for ur steering wheel?
See! Hehe
-

How's the Polo nowadays?
glad you brought it up........... i'm curious as to how its looking after the satin painting efforts...
-
Its going well, I'm now using it as chalk board, works really well!
The satin paint still really cool, but the only way to really wash it is to let the rain do it, but hey ho that works for me!
Only problem it scratches easily now on twigs and things easy enough to repair by putting another coat on :D
One thing different now, wheels have gone all black, due to cleaning issues

Cool, glad you replied as you may notice i'm currently doing mine (panel by panel)......
Do you know if there are any produts you can use on it... most that I am aware will just make the panels go chalky! I have done a couple of trials and have failed.. .I think MER works ok and gives a waterproof coat, water beads etc..

Not sure im afraid, I just use soapy water and rinse it bloody well, rain works the best because after its been washed its quite patchy and streaky unless its been rinsed REALLY well! but the rain seems to get rid of that.

Ah well, at the moment water beads off the paint a it is but i know that won't last... I'll have a play but think MER is the answer for those that can be a*sed.
By the way, still looks great!

i like the low maintenance approach to cleaning!
do you still have your standard suspension? my mate has a polo with knackered shocks and can't afford new.

It's more like questions such as does it need paint, would you miss its orignal colour, have you got somewhere to do it, can you afford a proper respray later if you don't like it later, I chose a really bad time to start mine!

yh see what you mean, but i might just roller original colour on car or matt black, but im fortunate to know a guy through my dad that worked for F1 for good 30 years painting the ferrari teams car's so always got a backup! and he is top notch paint guy!

doo it! cheap and easy, and I still love mine, my cousin satin blacked his mk3 but with 'proper' paint, doesn't look half as good - use trade spray! :afro:

Polo no longer for sale I got it back on the road , BUT the gearbox went AGAIN today
I cant remember the gearbox code for it I think the engine code was APQ would anyone happen to know??
ALSO and more importantly has anyone heard of any stronger replacements?
Thanks!
-
I think a mk3 Golf TDI box can fit but I'm not 100%. I remember looking at it as an option for a boosted 1.4 Polo.
-
reeeeeaaally? thanks Jimp, useful info :)
-
Yay
Good luck with the box ;)
-
I think a mk3 Golf TDI box can fit but I'm not 100%. I remember looking at it as an option for a boosted 1.4 Polo.
It does not.
You have an 085 gearbox in the Polo, the Golf3 TDI is 02A - cable-change.
The key foible of the 085 in my experience is that the mainshaft bearing pressed into the bellhousing gives up and then the shaft gets on down and has a boogie in the casing.
The bearing that goes is an LT van rear wheel bearing, the cost-cutting b*stards.
You need to find another 085 gearbox, it's OK they were fitted to pretty much all the common Polo 6Ns, but it must be a hatch, not a saloon, or a van.
Those have 020 gearboxes fitted to them (go figure).
Fascinatingly the hatch 1.9D NA had an 085 gearbox fitted, but with a different bellhousing and without one of the lugs on the petrol variant.
Most scrapyards should have a couple of these Polos lying about 1.0-1.4 - they're all pretty much the same.. The one down the road from here sells the gearboxes at £40 a go.

IIRC, any other box is a bastard to fit, yeah?
-
IIRC, any other box is a fatherless son to fit, yeah?
Eh?

Eh?
that's what I thought!
thank you for the info DH - very useful :)
I have been offered £600 as it is, very tempted as this will no doubt happen again, unless, as it sounds I go for a whole engine change to one with an 020 box?? would they be hard to get hold of due to being in saloons ect?
such a dilemma!
-
If you can get a cheap 085 replacement, do that. I dropped one out in about an hour in a scrapyard.
Hook the box out, find a reputable specialist and stick it in to have the bearing replaced. The one in the good sub-100k Polo was worn through the bearing surface and wouldn't have lasted much longer - it does seem the achilles heel of these boxes.
-
Have managed to find a 085 (its from a 1.0l) for £45 so that has been chucked in the Polo - there was no time to have anything on it replaced, getting it back later - so we will see how long it lasts  but at least this one was cheaper then the last one!
Just so fricking happy to have my olop back!
cheers for the help though DH
-
OOh Also got some camber shims for the back :) pics to follow once they're fitted...
