If it ain’t broke, fix it or leave it?
« on: 03 December 2021, 15:46 »
My 2013 Golf GTi PP is approaching 70k and running lovely. With my annual service approaching, any opinions on what I should ask to be looked at other than what’s in the service schedule, even if the car is running fine? I read on the forums that some have their water pump changed, LSD oil changed, gearbox oil changed, as a precautionary measure? Any other things I should look out for considering the age/mileage of my GTi?

If you don't have reason to change something don't! Also a friend that changed his manual gearbox oil on his mk5 R32 would firmly attest to that

But back to mk7's, unless the water pump is leaking or you're having cooling issues it would suggest it's fine, especially given it's price I'd leave it alone.

The VAQ Diff (LSD) oil is due every 3 years so at this stage your GTI should be on its 4th oil change.

The gearbox I'm assuming is a DSG and should be changed every 40k on the 6-speed dsg's from memory, so you'll have another while of driving before it need done.

Every car is different and you as the own knows what it needs best, but an Italian tune up, with an octane booster and fresh tank of fuel, with fresh oil and plugs is always a good option to me

Edited - To change Vaq Diff Service time to 3 years

I'm very much from the view point of leaving if not giving any trouble so think I'll leave the water pump until I start seeing a loss of coolant. Looking at all the records I have from previous owners I see no reference to the oil being changed on the LSD, is this part of the VW Service at a main dealer? I have the manual PP and again no reference to the oil having been changed unless it's part of the VW service and it hasn't been specifically noted?

My very near 3 year old 13k GTI PP is in on Monday for an MOT, Service, LSD and DSG fluid changes. After owning LR Discovery’s for 14 years prevention becomes a hard habit to break😂

The VAQ Diff (LSD) oil is due every 2 years so at this stage your GTI should be on its 4th oil change.

willni, opinions clearly differ, but the VW service schedules I have seen online seem to suggest a diff oil change at 3 years, is 2 years a typo or a change to the maintenance schedule?
Cheers.

Will certainly mention the LSD fluid change at the service, is this part of the service schedule or something that needs to be requested? Also, does the manual gearbox require a fluid change at the same intervals as the DSG?

It's apart of the service schedule but you should mention it, just depends on the dealership/garage, my dealership are very happy to alert you of when you need things done but they're also honest about it. Others have had trouble getting their dealer to do it and thus go to a VW specialist.

No service interval on manual gearboxes all sealed for life units.

I like the sound of sealed for life! Any idea of the rough cost of an LSD fluid change?
