I have a MK2 Golf GTi which I have been told by the previous owner is a Motorsport Edition and came from new with the BBS Kit on it. I wonder if someone on here could clarify if this was the case or if not how I can contact VW and get the original build details of how the car was specified new.
I would also like to know what wheels and tyres it should have on it. I currently have 17in BBS's on but I think these should be smaller. If it is a Motorsport Edition then I was told it should have a Motorsport steering wheel and gear knob which I would like to find if anyone can help. Thanks in advance. Gary

Some info here: https://www.vw-racing.org/history (https://www.vw-racing.org/history) have you checked the spec sheet sticker in the boot? I don't think yours is a Motorsport Edition.

Have you any idea what type of wheels, size of wheels and tyres a standard Golf GTi would of had? Gary

Think the previous owner made that one up.
If it was the car in the link it would be left hand drive, 5 door, 4 wheel drive, 16v supercharged and worth what - 50k?
Looks like a Kamei/Votex bodykit and I'm not sure those BBS are genuine.

Definitely not a Motorsport Edition.
What it might be is either a GTI Engineering or BRMotorsport car.
There would probably have been a plaque somewhere on the car if it had one of their engine conversions.
It’s a very very long time ago now and I’ve forgotten a lot of things in that time but if I recall correctly Oettinger also used to supply converted cars via special order to a London dealer (Scott’s of Sloane Square?) for those with deep pockets and a job in The City.
Then again it might just be a standard car with a bodykit fitted which was common at the time.
It would have originally been on 14” wheels and retro-fitted with 14 or 15” aftermarket wheels. 17’s didn’t become popular until late mk3 days.
How much documentation is with the car? That’ll provide some clues if it goes back far enough.

I didn't buy it as a Motorsport Edition. It was only in conversation with the previous owner after I had bought it who told me that. I couldn't remember or find anything out re the Motorsport bit. It has a BBS kit on it and I am wondering if to downsize the wheels to 14 or 15's or put spacers on the 17in so that on full lock they don't catch. Any thoughts and recommendations appreciated. Gary

It would be worth digging further as there might be a very expensive 2.0 engine conversion under that bonnet.
Spacers will probably exacerbate any problems you have with 17’s.
7x15” alloys will work better and look more in keeping with the vehicle’s history. I think I used to run 195/50/15 tyres but I’m not 100% on the profile as it was 20 odd years ago.

The spec label is on the panel behind the VW roundel. Lean in and left the boot carpet. There are decoders online for the spec.

It is just a standard 3 dr gti with a kit fitted and all colour coded, even managed to do the side mirror housings opposed to just doing the mirror caps.
Nice car all the same.
Generally when the kits were fitted the bumpers were left black.
