going to strip it again.......... :(
« on: 21 June 2004, 19:23 »
still not overly happy with the mk4 after its engine rebuild, ive had the old head fully checked out and the guides etc are all ok, so im gonna splash out on a new head gasket and bolts (?50 ish!) and strip the AGU turbo head that i fitted, im gonna take the valves out and grind em into my old AGN head, then fitted the tappetes from the turbo head (which i have still an dhavent used) and bin my old tappets as the internals of 1 or maybe 2 are knackered hence the 'ticking', then transfer the camshafts and vvt unit once more (and hopefully keep it all in sink this time and under pressure!!) then fit the head and hopefully get lucky, this seems to be the only way i may feel happy once more with it as ive been driving the work escort 16v estate and it blows my 20v clean away so its still under performing!!! this will tak eplace over the next week or 2 (when i have a few spare days....) and ill try my hardest to get me digicam out and take some step by step pics!!!

Hello Gaz,
Good luck with the rebuild.
I think it shows that spending more in the first place is usually better in the long run  ;)

yeah maybe!!! lol, this is only gonna cost me another ?50 and a days work!!, so it aint all bad!!, just wish id have used valves from replacement head into my head 1st off!!, never mind gonna give this a go and see if i can get it to run sweeter as ive been driving it for a few days now and it feels like it has some flat spots etc, (im assuming these are 'gasflow' probs due to the port size difference) but well see what its like when ive done it!!!, gonna order new head gasket and bolts at the weekend and maybe start next week??

Gaz ;D

Has the turbo engine got bigger ports?
if so the car should run better!
I suspect if you have a couple of duff tappets, thats what is causing your power loss, as those valves are probably not opening fully.
Maybe worth changing any duff tappets first, will be a lot cheaper and far less labour  ;)

Sounds all Russian to me mate, but good luck. I do remember when my mate put a AGN engine in my old A3 , he had to use some bit from the fecked AGN engine to make it work. The cambelt snapped at 90mph and done all the valves and cracked the casing! :'(

gonna try the tappet senario 1st 6 (as long as vvt unit donst fook things up again!!) got 20 different tappets to try, been to oxford and back in it today and the one tappet now sound louder, the power delivery has got better ont he run today also (at times pulled better than before!!) so i think maybe sort the tappet prob, then maybe injectors off of a agu turbo head?? maybe due to increased flow she might be running a little lean at times??? (yeah ports alot bigge rmatey, had to have a gasket made up to suit)

Gaz,
The higher flow shouldn't cause a problem, as the ECU will self adjust.
How much for new tappets.
If there is only one really knackered one, it might just be worth replacing it for new, or even better just replace the whole lot for new, shouldn't need anymore strip downs  :D
