Title: Buzzy engine noise
Post by: Will@carbon on 07 November 2011, 09:40
My petrol gti has a not entirely unpleasant buzzy noise under the bonnet when under load and accelerating. It maybe a air intake noise that's supposed to be there or a heat shield noise that's not.

Do they all do this if so no problem if not I'll get it lpoked at.

Thanks

it's normal on most of them...both my mk 6 GTIs had it. There seems to be a fix from VW. See thread below

Sweat, it's funny it does sound a little like its induction noise and I don't mind it really but it wasn't there when we picked it up.

mine has just clicked over 1000 miles today

i noticed the gti engine sounds a little rough and almost diesel like on cold start up but to drive the engine is smooth and really easy all thru the rev range

i think its just a trait of these engines TBH and not anything to worry about. I'm not worrying about mine anyway. i actually like the rough edge to the engines sound.

GTD has that rough edge sound as well when it's cold and it gets smoother after it gets warmed up. Seems normal for the newer turbo engines. My mothers Cooper S is the same. :)

If this didn't rattle the DV valve whoosh at 2000-3000 RPM wouldn't have a friend to chatter to

Just need it to rattle again at the 5000 RPM flatspot and your a winner  :lipsrsealed:

Be most interested. Is his a spanking new car? Hope he is trying to run it in a bit.
Will's lucky to get de-buzzed by you. Imagine trying to get VW to fix it. They'll say it's standard.
Maybe I have a buzz under hard acceleration, but the loud opera music drowns everything. But I have turned the music down to check for rattles of which I have zilch so far.

So much so for their PDI. Hope they pay for the part at least as I am sure they won't for your time and effort.

Yeah, an organisation is only as good as its weakest link. I'd get the first service done somewhere else. Disappointing, annoying and not acceptable. Have you told Lee?

When we owned an A4, the garage forgot to replace the various fluids in the car which included the oil. Lo and behold, when we switched it on, the dash board lit up like a Christmas tree with lots of flashing lights! That car was a pig, as it needed a new engine, gearbox and wiring loom after a year. It then ran beautifully for 2 months until a lorry wrote it off whilst it was parked on a quiet London street! We were so happy at it's demise.

It was replaced with a Rubino Red fully loaded Alfa 159 Q4 lusso Auto which was faultless over 3 years and 36k miles.

We now own a Pericles Green Merc 350 CDI Sport and it is perfect and trouble free. Amazing quality.

Sorry about the essay, but I have nothing better to do whilst recovering. So I thought I'd bore the lot of you and spread a bit of suffering!

To be fair unless the dealer drove the car for some time at various load points they would not be aware of this noise or the multiple issues with the standard mapping.

Its a little frustrating for me as trying to remap a car with issues is a big no no as it simply magnifies them.

Hope it all works out for both of you. A bit frustrating on a one week old car.

Word! After burning my hand several times on hot engines, exhaust, cats, turbos and drive shafts I fitted my magic clip (£11) and it is much better of not fixed. At first I could still hear the silly little noise but now 100 miles later for some reason it's 90% better, maybe because it's hot. Still a result!

So its £11 were from the dealers? If so i think i will order one as i would rather fit it myself then let the blind monkey boy loose on my car again.

Yes,  £11 ish. Let it cool down for about 2 hours though or suffer my pain.

Thanks. I will park it on the ramp over night before i do it. Ive burned myself too many times over the years trying to do things the quick way.
