Interested to know if the later cars have done any with the bag what version of coolant they are using to make up for it?
I would assume they are filled with G12 Evo which comes with the silica that the G13 didn’t.

Oh Ok - all I could find about G12 evo was that's a pre-mixed solution.

Sorry but I don’t need to remove it asap. It’s there for a reason. I’d easily remove it but just don’t believe all the hype on the internet blown out of all proportion. I’ll let you all know if it bursts and you can say “I told you so!”

Not Hype at all, I know 2 people that have had it break GTi and one R that had to have a new heater Matrix as it could not be flushed out properly. The guy who I use for big jobs is a VW specialist has also had a good few fail on VW/Audi vehicles. Prevention is the best route to take but it's your car your gambling with.

Local Indy told me he’d just had a Cupra in that needed a new heater matrix, not a cheap job. I wouldn’t (and didn’t ) take the risk for something that takes a few minutes and a few quid (for a new tank) to fit.
As for G13, it’s fine to use, just maintain the concentration.

I'd rather go to the trouble to siphon out some coolant every year and top up with fresh antifreeze rather than replace the heater matrix.

Apparently the silica gets everywhere in the cooling system and is a nightmare to fully flush out.

Also no silica bag. I just test the coolant with an anti-freeze tester and if it needs done then just change it. Really doesn't need done much more than with the bag.

Very dramatic. Bag will stay in and be fine. My car is 10 years old and I’ve had it since new. You can do the worrying for me.

I was 50:50 when I did mine... I thought I'd have a look one day.... and it was right there, poking up at me.... seemed rude not to take it out.

Bit like the first thing I did when I got my car.... I'd read about the bonnet cable coming loose so then couldn't open it, no idea if it was common or if it would ever happen to me but two cable ties and job done.

Like with most things.. prevention is easier than the cure.

I told have the cable tie done on my bonnet but these are not the same thing. I agree prevention is better than the cure. This is prevention in the case of the bonnet cable. The bag in the coolant expansion bottle is actually protecting your engine internals from corrosion and wear. It’s not the same thing. Imagine all the people not on forums driving around oblivious to this ticking time bomb

My understanding of the silica bag is that it slows the degradation of the glycerin based G13 coolant over time. Simply siphoning out the expansion tank and topping up with neat G13 (I hope) has the same effect. Just checked mine and it’s safe down to -37c.
