difference between mk1 1.8 8v engine and mk2

Hi all, new member and recently bought an '82 mk1 and absolutely love it. Body work is good just a few touch ups to do. But knew it would need work mechanically and electrically. It has had a mk2 8v conversion but it seems to be a botched job and it has intermittent starting problems. I took the dashboard off today and the wiring is a mess. I am questioning re-wiring but not sure what the differences are, Im pretty sure the fuse box is difference but what else...

Was hoping to just get another mk1 loom but guessing it would not be that easy.

Also is there any difference in the 2 engines or are they basically the same.

Has it been converted to mk2 digi fuel injection to get rid of the k-jet? If so that could explain the messy loom and there will be quite a few significant differences. 

Looms can sometimes be hard to source,  I had similar issues to you and ended up sourcing a new loom and started from scratch. ... I could kick myself because I had contact details for a bloke down in Maida Vale who sorted me out a a full set of unmolested GLI Looms to work with, lost his details but he does sell on ebay so it's always worth setting up a saved search for when they pop up.

No pretty sure its still running the K-jet system.

Yea got an ebay search sorted, they do come up relatively often.

Gonna start tracing and labeling wires tonight and see how bad it really is.
