Title: Mk2 Atlas Grey 3dr Gti now with 20vt!
Post by: Dave-iow on 11 January 2013, 07:26
Well ever since I sold my mk2 driver with an ABF in last year iv ebeen missing a MK2. So I kept an eye out for ones needing some love. A freind of mine had seen this and suggested I went an dknocked the door. So last week I knocked the door and left my number with the chaps mother and said to call me if he wanted to sell.

Its a 1989 (should be small bumper) 8v, Atlas grey with 88k on the clock!!!! Good old Isle of Wight ;)

4 days passed and no call or text. Then last Friday I get a text saying he might sell it. So on Sunday I went and viewed. Needs lots of TLC mechanically as the head gasket has apparently gone and where its been stood for nearly 2 years brakes etc are all foobared.

So plan is to get it running, MOT'd and looking straight. Then I hope to 1.8T.

The story so far:

Collecting it:

Not much of an update as ive been lazy with the pics. But new 8v engine is in with and running. So after 2 years the car is alive.. well sort off.

Has a few minor probs, fuel gauge doesn’t seem to work and seems to get a little bit hot. I think this might be the rad as it looks fooked and surprised it even holds water. So will get a new one on order asap.

In the mean time ive started replacing all the brakes. Heres the before:

Afters will follow (fronts are done though with fresh red paint)

Few new bits:

New steering wheel:
New genuine GTI badge and new Front indicators:

And a quick pic of the front. Cross hairs will be going this week as I have some new Genuine Hellas in the loft ready to go on ;)

Hope to get it on for MOT next week all being well

I've seen a 'few bits of paint'.  You appear to be having a complete respray done.  You need to mind that detailing OCD - it can get out of hand.

Well had a productive day yesterday. We got the engine on the new mounts, fitted the new servco and master cylinder (had to chnage the pipe end for the new master cylinder), made all the cooling and heating pipes up.

We then realised that the intercooler was never going to fit as it was too wide so have ordered one that will work we hope. Also fitted the downpipe and got the o2j cable shifters all mounted up. sits perfect so just going to cut a thread in the top of this so we can still use the mk2 gearknob.

Some pictures:

New servo and master cylinder:
Engine just in:
Engine tidyed up:
Looks better than this now as we have all the pipes sorted. And have a good idea on what pipes will be needed for the intercooler. A few eveings this week should see it all plumed up and then we will sort the elctrics out

Where are you running the electrics out of the bay?  OEM they go under the brake servo, which is ballache.
Title: Re: Mk2 Atlas Grey Gti soon to 20vt (yes another Isle of Wight Dave!)
Post by: Dave-iow on 22 January 2013, 17:13
will be running them under the servo. have left the servo lose in the hope it will give some extra wiggle room when we wire the loom into teh fuse box. Hope to run it as oem as possible

Post by: Dave-iow on 23 January 2013, 19:55
Well makeing progress slowly. Had to order another inter cooler as mentioned, now have that mounted behind the grill to the slam panel after lots to trimming and trial and error but wanted it to be in the best position for cooling.

With the intercooler mounted have now been able to order all the stainless and silcon hose's for the boost. So hope by saturday it all arrives and we can then atleast have it fully plumed up.

Think i have everything needed to finish it and will be getting on and sorting wiring next week.

Pics soon

What IC did you order Dave?

Would be great to see the pictures, will give me some idea about room.

Radiator and fans, what you have planned for those?
Title: Re: Mk2 Atlas Grey Gti soon to 20vt (yes another Isle of Wight Dave!)
Post by: Dave-iow on 25 January 2013, 14:25
A few pictures now the intercooler is mounted to the slam pannel. This works with the 4 lamp grill and all lights and the radiator in its orginal fixings points (16v one):

Ignore the blue hoses they were used to get an idea of what hoses's needed t be ordered to get all the boost pipes done. They have been ordered in black to try and keep it looking oem

Got lots more done this evening. Changed the oil and filter, changed the fuel filter, fixed a blow in the exhaust were we had removed the centre box, Wired the fan up, fitted the induction cone with some new hose.

Engine as its stands tonight after running it for a while to make sure all is ok:

Need to make a bracket for the cone filter to attach to the slam panel. Just need to attach the loom in the engine bay then we can fit the servo back and make a servo pipe up.

Not long now until we can road test at the weekend all being well

cheers nearly done on the install.

Made a bracket to hold the air filter, speedo cable fitted.

Just a few bits to do then the engine bits are done for the time being:

Wire up alternator
Fix bloody exhaust blow
Find gasket for servo as theres a small leak and it makes an annoying hiss in the car
Fit new pedal covers
Tap thread in gearstick for gear knob
then re fit lower dash and centre console.

You never know by next week will be ready to give it a proper clean and start using it

Much cheaper than the ones that are selling on ebay for £50+new (retail is about £32)

What's the fluid reservoir you've used?

Battery staying there mate. Happy it will get enough cold air. Its a lot further away from the turbo than a lot of mk2 20vts ive seen. Same goes for the intercooler, cant understand why so many people have over 50% stuck behind the bumper bars

Very close to brining it home now. Interior side of things is finished, gear knob fitted, centre console back in. Just radio left to plug in.

Also sorted some heat proofing for the steering UV joint, moved the gear cables away from the downpipe, wired in alternator light.

All that's really left to do is a final check over and sort out an over fuelling problem (hope its the maf)

Oh and the bloody servo is hissing, teach me for being cleaver. Bought a powder coated one from ebay and it bloody leaks so will need to get another one sorted

Oonce its home I can give it a clean and get it looking fresh and get some pics with a camera rather than my phone

got some tyres on today (only 2 as the Garage didn't order 4  ) But its highlighted that the back end needs to come down and all archs will need a little fetling to make these work. I have a brand new set of plastic arches to go on and next week when the other to Yoko's turn up we will perhaps make a start on getting them to fit. So trial fit pics:

It's your car 'n' all that, but those wheels and tyres on it ruin it for me.  They're way too big, it looks like a cartoon and loses all of the subtlety it had before.

Can't imagine they're light either, so they won't be doing the ride any favours.

Nope not lighter rides fine for me. This is no race car ! Just a to b with a little pace when needed.

Like you say my car and all ;)

Fantastic looking motor although unfortunately I've got to agree with DH in regards of the wheels,  i really like them but they just seem a touch too big especially on the front.
