Ok a lot of sh1te going round at the minute about HID's. They're not illegal per se - but they may fail the MOT, that and people you dazzle will hate you. Because they don't use filaments they don't produce the same distribution of light and as it hits your lens' it'll get focused the wrong way - exactly like wearing someone elses glasses. They can also suffer from colour differentiation issues etc.

Also bear in mind that 6500K is colour temperature and says nothing about how bright they'll be.

There's nothing going on around HIDs.

Aftermarket kits are illegal - end of story.  Here is the factsheet from the Department for Transport.

It states quite clearly that:

Quote
In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

and the rules you need to comply with are as follows:

Quote
1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

The key bit really is this:

Quote
Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

So unless you're installing headlamp washers and self-levellers as well as replacing the headlamp unit COMPLETE with one designed and E-marked for your application then they are illegal and by buying, installing and using them you are breaking the law.  - No need for the last bit. ta.

Oh right! Well there you go, they are illegal. Usually Irish laws (where I am) for stuff like this emulates what you have over there, so I assumed it was the same.
