Title: OEM Wireless charger retrofit?
Post by: My other womans a vw. on 12 August 2020, 09:02
Anybody attempted this or got any opinions on it?
From what i’ve read and understood,Vw stopped this as an option due to the signal amplifier, with new cars that were specced with the wireless charging option requiring removal of the amp before delivery-is this correct?
If anybody has it fitted,is it any good?

It was expensive to option and had the issue that wireless charging without wireless AA/ACP didn't make much sense vs the price point.

And yes, the signal amplifier had regulatory issues and was disabled on delivery of new cars at one point.

I have it in my car, and yes, the amplifier section was disconnected prior to hand over.

One thing that not a lot of people realise about this system, is that it gets you two fully functioning USB ports. One in the forward cubby hole (as usual) but slightly lower profile, and another under the armrest with a small elasticated strap to stick a phone into. You can actually plug a phone into each (for example one android and one Iphone) and you then get the choice on screen as to which phone you want to use for App Connect and can switch between them.

As to the wireless part itself, works as advertised and charges both my Galaxy S20 and my work Iphone XR without issue (though obviously not as fast as my Samsung quick charger pad that I have at home and on my desk at work.

Just a shame that Android Auto and Apple Car Play isn't wireless like it is in the new BMW 1 and 3 series, but it's something I wouldn't' be surprised that the MK8 Golf will have as an option.

The Mk8 definitely has wireless AA/ACP and wireless charging.

To be fair, wireless AA/ACP is a newish thing and requires different hardware on the MIB to make it work.

Even the Mk7.5's MIB predates the jump to wireless.

Cheers lads, looks like you need a few more bits besides the pad and wiring.
Sootchucker,is the front cubbyhole defo different to standard-with the lower profile USB port?

Yes, the cubby is different as the USB section forgoes the Aux socket so that it can be a smaller intrusion (i.e. doesn't extend all the way down to the bottom of the cubby like the non wireless charging ones do.

This is because the pad is designed to have the phone inserted sideways (i.e. the width of the cubby), and a standard one wouldn't be wide enough for the charging mat and most phones to go sideways. I think the only part they will share will be the door and the trim cover.

Thanks for that, will look into what’s needed and weigh up if it’s worth it.

There aren't really any other good wireless charging solutions available either (well for RHD anyway) - by "good" I mean mounting in the cubbyhole in the dash.

I guess without wireless AA/ACP most people didn't care....

It was useful for me tonight as I usually use my S20 in the armrest USB with Android Auto, but noticed my work phone only had 10% charge. So I popped it onto the charging pad and I had 62% charge at the end when I arrived home over 36 minutes it took me to get home.

Does anyone have a part number for the charger in the armrest & what is required to retrofit?

I spoke to a local car audio specialist about this mod around a year ago. He had bought a kit for a rhd golf, for the cubby in front of the gearstick but had not fitted it as he was too busy doing work for others. He intended to fit it in his Transporter. He took my number and said he would give me a call when he had it fitted. I’ve never got the call. He thought it would be around £350 fitted, to be confirmed. I’ll maybe give him a call.

Just FYI, my 2014 with the 'phone box' option has the usb socket and strap in the cubby. Might make it easier to track one down.

Cheers Colin, I just like having the front cubby closed while driving so want to start putting my phone in the armrest to charge and get car play working.

I'll PM may need your car reg to track down the part on ETKA.

Ali express have a replacement rear vent with two USB ports for charging.
It cost me around £60 inc delivery.
My first experience with Ali express involved a Dynaudio Retrofit kit which was a complete disaster,I said I would never buy or even try to buy as the above turned out from them again.
I was also looking at retro fitting wireless charging, but gave up due to lack of info and costs of the parts I could find.
This is when I stumbled across the rear replacement vent on a another forum and watched a how to fit video on YouTube.
Decided to give Ali express another chance, but i wasn’t expecting much.
The part arrived and was spot on-I’m a stickler for only putting genuine parts on my cars and if this vent is a fake,it’s a very convincing one-it’s all stamped up and the texture, colour and fitting matches perfectly, side by side I could not tell the difference.
Really easy to install,it’s powered from the 12 volt port on the centre console, just plug in and play or charge in this case.

Interesting to read about this option. I don't have any USB ports on my early car unfortunately but I get by with the adapter.

Would just buying a regular wireless charging pad from Amazon and plugging it into a USB port work? Could be a cheap option

I had a look on the. web site but it shows as out of stock.  I’ll try and give them a ring. As I posted a while ago the quote I was given was £350 fitted but they never got back to me.

You could, but I was planning on buying a Wireless CarPlay module to plug into mine, to have full capability.

Alex is only getting them into stock over the coming days, he put one up as a test could possibly phone up as ask for a pre-order? Only thing I'd like to know is how easy it is getting the terminal into the fuse box behind the glovebox before I order.

I emailed VWretrofit to ask if they will be getting them in and I received this reply (on a Sunday afternoon!).

“Yes we will get them back. Parts are ordered but its not in UK stock so back-order. Once we get them, stock will be updated.”  I’ll keep a watch as I want to do this.

Seems like a lot of money for a charger which when combined with wireless cp/aa won't actually keep the phone charged.

The discharge rate is higher than the charge rate and what's more the extra heat from charging and the hard use of the phone with something like navigation will cause a thermal shutdown.

Seriously, think twice...
