Glad you found a 7.5. The rear suspension arms corrode quite quickly. After treatment it is worth looking at golf dave post on the mk7 guides as there are vw add ons to help protect underbody parts. The supposed aerodynamic improvements are a bit wishful thinking but from experience the protection is good.

Cosmetic and bodywork matters / Paint work

Hi,

Does anyone on here paint cars on their drive or in their garage to a reasonable standard? I am looking at options around having my mk2 paint matched to the standard factory paint of Monza blue paint. The front wings and doors are still factory paint but at some point the rear end and roof have been painted a dark blue and its not a good finish.
I cant afford a full show standard respray but would love it to at least all be the same colour and look decent.

If anyone can comment on here or send me a PM I would love to have a discussion.

Many Thanks

Michael

A GTI always looks great in red!
Congrats

Was it a private purchase?

Probably over 90% of buyers wouldn’t notice the issues underneath until the car went up on the MOT ramp so it’s a good job you’re hands on and used to dealing with such issues. The suspension components aren’t unknown for getting a little corroded and it certainly sounds like your car has been exposed to some bad roads and salt. It doesn’t take long for these parts to start looking untidy underneath, they don’t make ‘em like they used to as the saying goes. Then again I’m old enough to remember 1970’s cars that rusted after a few years and there’s still plenty of those about that are now lovingly cherished (and worth a fortune!)

Good to hear the car doesn’t disappoint after the 997, admittedly you lose that pure driving focus but the GTI fares well as a daily driver that can hold its own.

Is this a thing? The inside of the windscreen smearing up more than in the 7.5’s?

I thought I was going mad, I have to clean mine much more than in my previous 7.5 but thought it was just me misremembering,

It’s definitely a thing, I think it’s the new plastics giving off fumes causing a haze. It does settle down after a year or so.

Thanks chief, just over a week ago, I managed to get a 19 plate in red  (i am told red cars are faster, and it also matches my wifes rollerskate!) 1st impressions (coming from a 911) are very favourable. so nice to connect my phone to the in car gramophone system and have a useable boot space. Its also a bit nippier than i was expecting. So far I've had all the wheels off and found the trailing edge of the sills to be just losing the paint protection, so that got 4 coats of paint/stoneguard etc and I'll keep an eye on it. next job will be to treat the rear suspension components which are surprisingly rusty for their age.

haven't noticed a difference between 7.5 and 8.5 tbh but do find the 8.5 more challenging in the areas where the glass meets the dash, near-improbable angles for me to clean that part, so i can see smear especially when the sun is right in front of

Golf mk7 / MIB1 Wireless Carplay. Anyone tried one of these?
« Last post by breezasib on 04 October 2026, 14:19 »
My wife has my old 2014 GTD and has always been jealous of my MIB2 Carplay. Looked to upgrade but at £700+ is a bit pricy.

Has anyone tried one of these units?

Yes I swapped the wipers on mine too, to the Bosch Aerotwins - agree the OEM ones aren't bad, but the Bosch replacements are quieter and better and clearing for not much £ (replaced the rear wiper for the Bosch too, only a fiver - easy win).

Having suffered with 'smeg' on the inside of the windscreen more in my 8.5 GTI than I ever did in my 7.5 or 7, I have also bought one of the triangle headed, telescopic arm cleaning rods (with microfibre on the flat surface) and treated the inside of the windscreen to a proper clean - is now miles better.

I'm too tight to replace the rear, rarely use it anyway. Tried the Bosch yesterday, much better!

Have you a link to this wonder product for the inside please? Sounds great!
