Title: Water Filter recommendations / questions
Post by: p3asa on 28 December 2017, 00:36
Looking to pull the trigger on a water filter but just looking for some questions to be answered beforehand.

Ive seen the Race Glaze version mentioned in a few posts. Is this still the one to go for?

Also it comes in a few sizes, 7l, 14l & 25l. Obviously the bigger size the longer it will last but is there an optimum size to go for?
I suppose it depends on how many typical washes you can get out of each?

Anyone know roughly how many washes from the 7l size, filling both buckets up with it then hosing the car at the end?

Cheers.

I’ve got the Raceglaze 7L which is great.  In retrospect I’d get the 14L, purely so you don’t have to empty and refill with resin so frequently.  Any bigger and I think the vessel becomes too unwieldy and emptying of resin would be a pita with a 25L I should imagine.  But I’m quite happy with the 7L vessel which is easy to move about (can be attached to wall with a bracket) and easy to change resin over.

I use it for everything - filling lances, buckets, all pre-washing (double) and all rinsing - the whole lot, so obviously use a lot more resin than someone using to fill buckets and final rinse only.

There are lots of cheaper vessels available on window cleaning websites and I know several people using these that say they are fine.

Buy replacement resin from window cleaning websites, as it’s much cheaper than say from Raceglaxe.   I’ve used the following types, but shop around for best current price.

Buy a funnel too which will help no end with resin changes.

Plus buy a TDS water hardness meter so you can monitor the water and get to know when to change the resin, although you’ll be able to tell as you’ll start to see water spots on the car.

There’s quite a bit of info in this VWROC thread with links and alternatives too, so worth a read.

Cheers Bec for the in depth reply.
Its something I kept meaning to pick up which should make a massive difference especially to the dark coloured cars in the house.

How often are you changing the 7l one with all that use?

Quite often Stevie. I don’t really keep track of exactly how often that closely, but I’d rather pay out for a couple 5L bags of resin a year (which is roughly what I use) than deal with the effects of hard water on a black car.  Been there, done that for several years and wish I’d bought a water filter years ago.
