ANY INFO ON CHANGING THE CLUTCH
« on: 15 July 2010, 10:11 »
Hi everyone, just brought a mk3 8v a week ago and i need to change the clutch as its slipping, i am very confident when it comes to car maintenance but i have never changed a clutch. Any advice, tips, or threads about changing a clutch would be very much appreciated as I'm going to start it tomorrow. cheers guys and girls!

It is worth fitting a new cable at the same time.

have a look on clubgti forums, theres an excellent guide on doing a box on a MK2 in the faq sections somewhere, 99% same for a MK3 :)

get yourself a new crankshaft oil seal and cover plate gasket aswell. I would also reccomend a new gearbox but that might be deemed ridiculous. And what about a new gearbox to engine gasket? Dont forget to get a clutch alignment tool.

good idea, also get an input shaft seal and pushrod bush + seal for the gearbox. the GTI needs a bigger seal which is vw only, but dont worry its not expensive.  best to check your gearbox code though, just in case its been changed. also should check so you know what clutch you need as well.

no need to change the box->engine gasket, thats just a bit o tin metal. also clutch alignment tool isnt really needed just centre it by eye. it only needs to be close enough so the box fits, as soon as you press clutch it self-centres anyway
