18s on a MK4 GTI T
« on: 05 October 2003, 23:31 »
Hello all,

Prob a stupid question but what effect will replacing the standard 16" wheels with 18"s have on 0-60 timings, acceleration etc? Will the speedo be out much?

Cheers

Normally you would put a lower profile tyre on an 18" rim for Golf fitment so the rolling radius would remain about the same as the 16" tyre - therefore there would be negligible effect on the performance speedo accuracy.

I can't remember the normal 18" tyre size that is commonly fitted to Mk4's but if you search on the net there are tyre sites where you can enter your existing tyre size (eg 205/55 R16) and it will calculate the appropriate tyre profile to use with a different wheel rim diameter (eg 18").

cheers

If you're running the standard 16" Montreal II's on 205/55/16's your 'rolling radius' is 1985.5mm

if you move to 18" rims I suggest you run with a 205/40/18, which will give you a rolling radius of 1951mm

This is about as close as you get, with a difference of approx 1.74% - which is naff all really.
