Which badges?
« on: 09 September 2003, 20:50 »
Is there a way to tell which GTi it is just by the badge? What should a 150 GTi TDi have?

Your PD150 should have the GTi badge with the red i.
Lesser PD models are badged as TDi's
Normally aspirated petrol GTi's are badged as 2.0 GTi (all in silver)
I have seen a mixture of petrol-turbo's, some with GTi all in sliver, some with the red i - it is very much year dependant from what I've seen.

Contacted my local VW dealer and they said it should have the letters TDI all in red for a 150. Currently has GTI all in silver.

???!!!!
Thats just undermined everything I thought I knew!!!

See post GT TDI 130 0R 150 BHP
This was another discussion on badges, and Carl (another PD150 owner) has the same badging as me (GT in silver, red i).

To add further confusion to the pot, when I had my car broken into and the bootlid resprayed, the dealer fitted an all silver badge. I 'created' saying I wanted my red i back (fickle f*cker aren't I?) and they swore blind that the all silver badging was correct (they DID change it though :))

TBH, I don't think the dealers have a clue and are just as confused as the rest of us!!

I don't think there has ever really been any consistency to the whole badge colour thing. Personally I would prefer all silver and keep the element of surprise if you have a stupidly fast diesel or whatever!  :P

My GT TDi 130 PD has a silver T and red Di... My brothers GTi TDi 150 PD has a GTi badge with red i... Both cars are 12 - 18 months old.

As far as I understand it, the 1.8T model was initially labelled a GTI with all the letters being silver which you still see plenty of on the road.  The 2.0 litre model was just labelled '2.0'.  All this was as it was was done on the continent, but then apparently a lot of 2.0 litre owners over here were requesting that they wanted a GTI badge on theirs (there's a good reason why it didn't have a GTI badge!).  So eventually a lot of dealerships started re-badging them. so THEN the dealers had to do something to distinguish the 1.8T from the 2.0, hence the introduction of the red 'I' which appears on the more recent 1.8T's.

One important thing to note is that all the re-badging is done in the UK, they are all shipped from Europe with the original badge schemes and it's the dealers over here have to change it all to please the petrol-heads before they are delivered.  The confusion arises from the fact that some dealers obviously stick with the European convention and don't re-badge anything, hence people still get all kinds of variations.  Like the dealers that Frosticles spoke to seem to still go by the european convention.

According the 'UK scheme' your PD150 should be labelled 'GTI' with a red I (and so it should as it whips the 1.8T on the road).  When I got my PD150 delivered I was fully expecting a TDI badge but was very pleased to see 'GTI' sitting proudly on the back! Incidentally, I once saw one fool in Spain had his labelled as a 'GT TDI 4Motion'!!

One visual clue to distinguish the 1.8T and the PD150 GTI's is the PD150 has two 'air scoops' on the plastic below the front bumper.

I agree with the above.

My previous 1999 S plate 1.8t had silver GTI. Then a mate got a T plate 1.8t and it had the red i. So I when I was waiting for my 2000 1.8t I expected a red i but still got a silver badge!

VW dealers were very inconsistent to which cars they applied the red i to. My 03 1.8t from June has the red i!

Previous - GTI 1.8T 1999, GTI 1.8T 2000
Current  - GTI 1.8T 180bhp 2003  :-)

my 99 gti has silver 'gti' badge, and as its a non turbo its spot on, but i have seen turbo models with the same and the 2.0 gti the same with out the '2.0', as its been said there is no consistancey and you could not positively say which has which, because also when the mk4 was launched it was in high demand so alot of imports were shipped over and this made it even more difficult to determine which model is which just by the badging. if it flys by quick its a turbo, or a quick tdi, if it dont its not!
