I may be able to upgrade the car this time next year. I was going to try a 9n3 Polo GTI but MX-5s are increasingly tempting :lipsrsealed:

MX5>9n3
9n3 GTI however... That's a tough one.

Fair enough, might be worth checking to see if it is undersealed being an import.

It has been at least once and there's plenty under the car. The usual rust spots are frankly spotless. Much much tidier than my mum's old UK spec 1.8 which was a few years newer. That needed welding on both sills.
I only found one tiny bubble on the passenger front arch where it looks to have had a slight knock with a tool and cracked the paint. It's about 2mm in size, tiny. It's probably the tidiest body on a MKI MX-5 I've seen in years.

 I hope at least DH acknowledged the goodness of the MX5 as a drivers car even if it's not the most sensible daily.
Nick
-
That looks ace that does
as these are (apparently) such capable / fun cars on road and track, does it spell the end for the dedicated trackcar? Or will that go more hardcore?
-
I hope at least DH acknowledged the goodness of the MX5 as a drivers car even if it's not the most sensible daily.
I might have said I thought it seemed a sensible commuter, after all if you're going to commute, at least enjoy it. Just remember, if it snows, just don't.

-
I actually really like it Nick! good purchase.
-
well the roof wasnt down and it wasnt raining :lipsrsealed:
-
Lol, it stayed up on the way home and it pissed it down at one point. Just been out for a country lane blast with the heaters on, roof down and Lizzie in the passenger seat. AWESOME CAR! It sounds amazin with the exhaust blasting though a tunel with the top down. Lizzie's already taken it out for a short drove and she loves it, I'm forgiven!

glad Mrs H is coming round :afro:
-
She is yeah, looks like I'll be driving her fiesta more often than I would like form now on!
Just been out to try it out in the dark, lights are pretty good although it seems odd having those great big pop ups in your field of vision. It was also a bit greasy out so though it rude not to wag the tail on a couple of roundabouts.
Nick
-
Very jealous. Nice find mate.
Any plans for it?
-
Plans are just to enjoy it. The only things I want to get done are the alignment and get it into someone who knows about these cars to give it a good timing/fuelling set up. Only other things are spray the front grill black and maybe change the door mirrors for original BRG ones. Oh and maybe a hard top for winter, but not really got anywhere to keep it in the summer and they're expensive.
Oh yeah and I need guy to work his magic on the slightly flat paint.
Nick
-
Mmmmmm I like!
Dark green and Gold wheels!
-
Just sold my mk1 MX5 for my GTI. Did loads of stuff to it, timing, decat etc etc, please ask if you want to know anything
Had it for 3 years. Was/am a member of the OC and forum and it is excellent!
-
Jap ftw!
-
Momo Team 300mm?
apart from that I kinda like it, never driven one tbh, although I am told they are a fun little car.
-
Nice, glad you finally got one :afro:

btw - i am blaming you for this sh!te weather... its rained every day since you got it!

Is rust really that much of a problem on these? Would quite fancy a hardtop one this time next year.

Only really in the sills. Check you drainage holes!

Cheers, it's a lot of car for £1250 and the Larini exhaust is addictive (although not good for MPG). I'm quite surprised with it to be honest. You can happily potter about keeping it below 2.5K revs and it'll burble away, be a pleasure to drive and return mid 30's mpg. Then when you feel like it you can wind it up to the red line in every gear, blow your ears off and watch the petrol gauge move at an alarming rate. It isn't actually that fast though, just feels it. I got dicked by a 106 GTI in a straight line earlier.

had a 1800 one of these put a spax suspension kit on it , a pair of jackson raceing anti roll bars
cusco strut brace with a built in brake master cyl brace ,also put a half roll cage in it . handeld like a go cart
after fitting all that . also fitted a full raceing beat exhaust system and manifold sounded lovely when you put
your foot down . great little cars dont let people put you off them id have an other one again
-
Oooh Nick. Did you have a look at this one?
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2835778.htm
-
No, looked a bit tatty for £1K especially with no T&T.
Nick
-
First full tank done and returned 34.7mpg. Not bad!
Had a full on tank slapper this morning on a roundabout thought, nearly shat myself.
Nick
-
i did my first tank, only got 57mpg
-
But Nick had a load more fun I bet!

If you do this to your MX-5 I WILL get the Corrado back on the road, drive it to Basingstoke, hunt you down and run you the f*ck over with it to learn you a lesson.
Just for reference and so as you know..
-
Haha!!!
They do look absa ferking lootely terrible in those pics. Must've been a good angle on the one I saw earlier.
Good shout on getting the corrado on the road though.
-
Sunny morning, hood down, tunes pumping and some empty B-Roads. That sure gets you set up for dealing with the week ahead!
Cleaned it again this weekend, ordered some new leads as I have a misfire and of course I have ordered some stickers. You know me and stickers.

New leads fitted, missfire seems to be gone, car goes much faster. Win.

2nd tankful with more hooning than before and about 90% with the top down and returned 33.23 MPG. Result!

I had my mk1 for 3 years and it never missed a beat at all. My golf however! love them both though

Massive missfire issue which has got so bad it's pretty much undrivable. Going to see if I can limp it down to an MX5 specialist in Portsmouth on saturday morning so they can take a look at it as I'm not going to start throwing money and parts at hoping something will fix it. I suspect the coil pack is breaking down but at £200 it's not something I can afford to buy on a whim.

Breakers?
-
Portsmouth. MX5Parts? They know all there is to know, but you may have to pay a bit extra.
-
I can get a used one but even they're £50. The place in Portsmouth also breaks MX5's so if they can diagnose the fault I can get the used bits from them.
nick
-

No it's Autolink http://www.autolinkmx5.com/index.asp they're sort of between portsmouth and southampton. Been recommended as THE people to go to for MX5 issue sin the south by people of MX5nutz forum. Going to give them a call tomorrow morning to see if they can have a look at it on sat morning.
Nick
-
Autolink are brilliant! Think the main bloke is Andy?
I was/still a member of the OC and the people are just brilliant! Used Nutz too, but couldn't fault the OC one bit. The magazine you get 4 times a year is worth the annual 30 odd quid alone.
Have you got a Eunos version? If so get the cat off, get the bypass pipe from mx5parts for £50. It's an awesome bit of kit. Get the timing advanced too if yours is a 1.6. Standard is 10 deg, 14 is the common increase, but you can go to 18 if you are happy to use premium unleaded all the time.
-
It's an Eunos and already has the cat bypass and 14 degree mod
nick
-
Good stuff!
-
Well Autolink have said they are very busy tomorrow but can spare me 5 mins to get a fault code reader on it and have a quick nosey at the issue. Hopefully they'll nail it, I can get the bits from them and get this sorted and get back to fun motoring.

fingers crossed eh?

£200 for a coilpack

Yes I do and not for very long if my wife found out I bought a turbo kit for it.
Nick
-
Well I took it down to Autolink who are an MX-5 specialists and had the ECU read which chucked out an error code for the ECU temp sender. Picked one up from them as well as a couple of other bits I was after. Changed the sender and so far so good. As it was an intermittent fault the next few days will be the test.
Total cost was £22 for the sender, 2 gaskets I needed for the thermostat housing which is weeping a bit and replacement side repeater which had a broken clip.
Nick
-
FYI, you have Autolink (wimbledon chase) and the Japanese breakers yard (weir road) the other way up the A3 in wimbledon.
little bit further to go but handy,The guys in the breakers are pretty helpful and have quite a big yard
-
SO I was wondering do MKII headlights fit the 5? Thought it might look quite good with some crosshairs. Turns out someone else has asked the question on MXnutz and this picture surfaced:
Might have to be done!
Nick
-
Think you may have caught the modding bug.
-
Not really, I think I have a pair of the cross hair lights in the shed from one of my old MKII's. THe only mods I'm looking at for the MX5 are a front lip and maybe some -35mm springs. Other than that it's awesome. THings that wear out will be replaced with upgraded items though. If bushes need changing it'll get poly bushed, if the manifold starts leaking it'll get a stainless 4 branch etc etc. THe only other thing I might get is a hardtop with a heated rear window for the coldest parts of winter but they're pricey at £300 for a tatty one or more than I paid for the car for a new one!
Nick
-
This is how it starts.
It does sound like you've got a good plan for it.
-
Hardtops a good shout man and if it needs work/paint and stuff sure we can sort you out down the workshop!
-
I've got a set of winter tyres from my mk1 which I sold last month. The bloke who bought the car didnt want them. I got the tyres in December and had them on til march/April. Have the receipt. They were very useful with the rwd. In my garage waiting to go on eBay in a few months. Let me know if you're interested.
-
What size and brand are they?
Nick
-
Prestivo. And I think 185/65 14 but I'd have to double check tomorrow if you want.
-
I'm on 15's.

What are those wheels?
-
Rays Engineering 15's. Don't know the exact model as they're JDM wheels and I'm having issue finding out what they are. I wasn't that keen on them when I went to view it but really love them now. The rear two have got a fair bit of white worm on the lips so going to have to get them refurbished in the spring. Luckily the Mx5 is 4x100 ET 35 so I can stick the rims off the golf on it while they're away being done.
Nick
-
Im guessing them rims are pretty dam light too?
-
I guess so, not taken one off yet.
nick

she's cleaning up well :)

Yeah, need to get some OE front mudflaps though as the sides get well dirty and stone chipped.
NIck
-
volk ce28's?
worth a fair wedge if they are gen's
-
Yea just looked em up and wasnt sure how many Yen it cost! But lots of them!
-
So the water marks came back. Proper gutted.
Today took he MX5 up to a mates unit with Archie and took the bonnet off and attacked it with 1600 grit wet and dry, then gave it 3 coats of lacquer. Got some of the marks out but they're hard to see when working the bonnet so missed a few up the back end. Problem is they're now sealed in with lacquer. Will flat it back in a week once it's properly cured and polish it up to see how it looks. I might well have to cut it all off the top half of the bonnet and give it another go.

Well we'll see how I get on fixing the bonnet as I have also got it on the wing tops which I want to fix.
Marcus who's unit I used today has offered to blow the whole car over in a long weekend in 2pac for a very reasonable price if I help prep it so that might well be happening in the new year as it'll get rid of the stone chips and I can fill the car park dings etc.

any more of the rx-7? :lipsrsealed:

Lol. She's left the workshop now painted up matte black. Looks fairly aard thankfully! Owner reckoned it's had 20k in the engine and is pushing about 500ponies. Seems realistic as we couldn't getthe turbos to engage properly in the yard.

Aye, it was a beast. Looked nice in Matt Black as well.

Purchased a boot rack today:

Should come in handy for myself and Mrs Horney's week in Cornwall at the beginning of October. Also planning to take it to Fouras on the mid west French coast next summer which will involve a couple a nights camping each way. With a tent and our stuff for 10 days holiday a boot rack was certainly going to be needed for that.
Also worth mentioning that Mrs Horney likes the 5 so much she's looking at getting a MKII 10AE to replace her 15 year old Fiesta.

It's a 99 MK2 10th Anniversary Edition with only 49K on the clock and in great condition. Has half black leather, half blue suede seats and is a 1.8 with a 6speed box and Torsen LSD. It's a bit quicker than mine! Just needs Guy to work his magic on the paint as it's a bit scratched.

Awesome.

Mini is staying (Possible under going a nut and bolt re-furb in the spring). Fiesta will be going in the next couple of weeks.
Nick

6speed and an LSD! Ferkin' sweet!
-
I'm guessing Lizzie REALLY liked your MX5?
-
Yes she did. She was saving for a TT but after driving mine and then going to look at a few this one just had to be bought as it's a perfect spec, mint body and a good price. Not to mention it's quite a rare special edition.
Nick

Just gimme a shout when you want me my friend! :)

Just gimme a shout when you want me my friend! :)
It's gonna need your skills as it has quite a few light scratches and lots of swirls. THe headlights need a good cut back as well as the plastic has gone a bit flat and yellow.
We're off on hols next week so it's probably be later in October though, plus buying it has skinted Lizzie out. It should be at BaD-VAG on Thursday though so you can check out the paint and see what you think.

A very cool pair
Forgive the noobishness but why does the green Mx-5 have pop-up lights while the blue one has regular lights? I thought all mk1s had pop-ups?

Out of interest, how do you find the perfromance of your MX5? Im seriously considering buying a basketcase as a project (seemingly a lot around me at very little money and Im not afraid of welding if needed and working on one) to do some trackdays, sprints etc with the long term goal of building a kitcar around it but I doubt I could put up with anything slower than my 8v Mk2 Gti as the short term goal would be to garage and restore the Gti's bodywork over winter.
-
It's probably on a par with an 8v GTI but feels a bit quicker due to the seating position and lowness to the ground. Also a MKII doesn't power oversteer round roundabouts
They were never designed to be that fast, but instead good fun at legal speeds which is exactly what they are. The Mrs MKII is a 1.8 with a 6 speed box and that's actually pretty rapid.
If you're looking to get one get an Eunos import, normally less rust and most have an LSD and better spec, avoid anything post 94 that's a UK car, they're de-tuned. 1.6 revs better but 1.8 is a tiny bit quicker. Rust is your enemy, they rot like hell on the rear section of the sills as people never check the drain holes are clear. Forced induction is an easy engine upgrade as the engine is designed to take boost and is low compression.
Any more questions, fire away!
Nick
-
Just to show how fun they can be:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urEduyP-5X8&feature=player_embedded
Nick
-
Cheers for the reply. I know they can be fun, my mums fella loved them but the fastest car he ever drove was something like an old Mk3 astra Gsi so I never trusted his belief that they were fast. You suggest an import but the last time I tried to get an insurance quote on an import (admittedly a LONG time ago and on an MR2 Turbo and a Jap spec 200SX but..) the prices were ridiculous. One other question is have you tried them with an LSD or not (I cant stand open diffs on RWD cars) and if so, can they still be pushed into power oversteer without acting like a tool?
-
Insurance wise the specialists don't sem to charge much difference between UK and Jap cars. I pay £400 for mine fully comp with Greenlight.
Mines got a Viscous LSD and it certainly drives better than the 1.8 non LSD my mum used to have. I'm running Toyo T1R's on the car which are quit sticky so I have to give it some beans on clean tarmac to get the back end out but in the wet it goes pretty easy and is controlable and progressive. The Torsen LSDs are better but AFAIK were only fitted to MKII's. My long term plan for the car is to swap the running gear out for the 1.8 6 speed set up which is in the later high spec MKII's.
Nick
-
Cheers and thanks for the restriction tip .
-
No worries. MX5 nutz is a good forum for hunting out info and getting advice. I've got pretty hooked on these things since buying mine. Had a right ball going on holiday in it last week, made it more of an adventure than taking a boring hatch back.
Nick
-
Won a wind break for behind the seats on eBay for £25 last night which is a result.
Sorted the heating out on Sunday as well. Was hot OK but not much puff, stripped the heater box down and found the flap that selects either air from outside or resirc had fallen down over the fan causing the intake to be hugely restricted. Removed it and now I get a facefull of hot air. Result. Still had to crack out the GolfGTI.co.uk beanie this morning though as the top of my head gets cold on the way to work with the top down at 7am!
In other news I'm photographing a wedding this coming weekend for some extra cash. The 5 will be getting some lowering springs, 2 new front tyres, WIM's fast road wheel alignment setup and possibly a Garage Vary front splitter.
Nick
-
For thsoe interested, the GV splitter looks like this one:

I love the way this is going!
Just out of interest, how tall are you Nick?
5'10" so kinda average height.
Soooooo... when you getting a spoiler?
I'm not that keen on spoilers to be honest, they look good on the cars when they are fitted with a hard top but a bit poop when the hoods down. I have toyed with the idea of a duckbill boot spoiler on a spare boot. That way if I hardtop it up for winters I can run a boot with a spoiler and then in the spring lose the hardtop and go back to a non spoiler boot.
This is a MKII but shows what I mean:

That BGW is insane on that blue 5, he took it off Stanton's yellow S2000. Looked OK on the Honda, looks gash on the 5.

Nick

Must be a CAT D now though?
-
Yeah of course but you can see the damage wasn't bad and it's £850 for a tidy, rust free car which is a bargain. If I had the money I'd be tempted to add it to the collection!
Nick
-
If I had space to put it..........

Sucks so much that i can't save money. Would love that

its a bit concerning if the dash was cracked in the accident

The dash crack will be from the sun.
Nick

ah ok!

You free on sunday afternoon? THe meet is back to sundays and would be good to catch up. If not then I'll have to get my ass over to guildford one night soon for a beer.
Nick
-
yeah i should be, will give you a shout on sun
-
Schweeet, you can take the 5 out for a quick razz.
Nick
-
Sig's looking good mate.
Would that car be a good buy to play with for a few months and make a few quid out of or am I just being greedy?
-
They're always worth a few more quid in the spring. These things have hit pretty much rock bottom value wise but rust free ones will always be worth a premium.
Nick
-
Most convertibles are a good buy in autumn/winter and sell best in spring/summer

Almost looks like your MX5 on Forza

It's the same lip as the one on Forza.
Nick

Just need the two support rods now

Nah that's the Forza splitter, the one I use in forza is the Garage Vary splitter which is this one.
Thinking I need to add a duckbill rear spoiler now.
Nick

Just scored some MaxdaSpeed lowering springs for £40. Result. Should mean there's enough left in the pre-christmas modding budget for the duckbill boot spoiler.

^ Nice mod
My Mrs used to have a 51 reg MX5. We got rid of it when I tubbed her up!
I must admit I did quite enjoy driving it. A good little fun car to drive and as relaible as they come.

The boys were down working on the rod and Marcus was doing some stuff on the RX7 and Fiesta. Was a fun morning.

So boot spoilers. To start with thought they looked poop, then with the splitter fitted thought it kinda needed something subtle, not too in your face and retro ish.

Whats the running costs like on your MX5? i am being taken in by the Roadster charm
-
Not too bad. Low 30's mpg if driven sensibly, parts prices about the same as a VW of similar age, reliability is supposed to be good and I have no complaints on that front so far. Only sticking point is insurance which can be pricey, especially on imports.

 Not a bad car for shed money eh?
-
By Shed do you mean Mk3
Car looks sweet, my misses would be easily persuaded to go for an MX5 she only likes them and Landrover 110's.
I am not a Sheep worrying farmer so its the only choice as far her tastes in cars go.
Lets see what happens next year re company car.........
-
can't wait to lower your car.
-
can't wait to lower your car.
Yeah, absolutely.
Think this might be one of my favourite cars on the forum. :lipsrsealed:
-
Noticed recently the handling has been a bit off and the car felt twitchy and not very sure footed, especially at speed or over rough stuff. On cleaning this weekend I noticed that the inside of my nearside tyre was quite warn and it looked like I had a fair bot of toe out going on. Seems my "Off" the other week must have knocked a few things out.
Took it to a local place to work at lunch to have the tracking done and they tweeked front and rear, it was quite far out! The quick blast back to work seems to show much improvement. In fact it feels better than ever. Result!
Will be interesting to see the further improvement the full alignment at WIM will make when I get that done in December after fitting the lowering springs.

When I recieved my coilovers I took them to work and fitted them after, estimating to leave at about 12AM because I assumed it was going to take at least an hour just to remove each siezed top cup.
I was home at 6:30PM.

Stop being such a damn poof an fit them Friday!

Well by the time he's done his hair, lifted his tools out one by one (sockets are heavy you know), found his scissors, some gloves, a shower cap to keep his hair clean and got his boyfriend to make him a nice cup of hot chocolate and a scarf, thermals, gloves etc to keep all nice and warm.........
THEN, he's ready to work on the MX-5.
My MX-5 owning collegemate is the same.
It's why the MX-5 fourm take so long to fit a set of wheels.
Day one, get tools ready
Day two, undo one nut.
etc etc etc.
It's why the members ride project threads are so slow.

Has she got any good insurance quotes? Sky insurance (Advertise on here) are supposed to be good for MX5's. There's some good info on MX5 nutz for insurance. They're not cheap though. Mines not far off what I pay on the track car.
Nick
-
Did a go compare and got £700 on a provisional TPFT
-
Blimey, that's well good! I pay just under £400 with 7 years NCB and being an old git!
Do you guys want me to take a look at it for you?
Nick
-
I dont know what's going on with it tbh. She's got her mk3 in the other garage and bought the mk4 so that when she passes it'll go in her name.
Doesn't really seem fair that she could potentially have 3 cars but no licence!
-
You should buy it then.

So I'm properly feeling the MX5 love tonight. Left work at 6pm and it was cold, clear and stary skied. Had the hood down and the heaters on max. Got off the dual carriageway from the office and hit the A and B roads home. No traffic at all so able to push on with late braking, nailing apexes and playing with a bit of power oversteer in the slower corners. Utter driving joy!
I also had an email form the head of property services today to explain that drifting in the office carpark is apparently frowned upon. Funny though as she fingered our IT director for it first as he has the same spec MX5 as me (He bought it after I took him out in mine), luckily he saw the funny side! Should probably calm it on the skidding front anyway as I'm murdering my rear tyres.

Buy it now, have some fun, sell it in the summer and be quids in.

Springs fitted and eeerrrrr, it's not really any lower. Seems the used springs I bought might not have been lowering ones. They are tighter wound though and feels way more planted than before.

can i make out a faded eibach logo on the springs? that will be why its not lower!

Yup, they are indeed Eibach ones. The before and after show it's actually a little lower!
Nick

a lot of work for no drop
but as long as it drives better and your happy then all is good
:afro: at the lights

you or him ? whats his tea making skills like

The work was shared equally although Archie made most of the tea!
Nick

My tea making skills are only second to my dancing skills.
In fact I think we would have been done by lunch if it wasn't for all bodypopping
-
Yeah the dancing did kinda slow us down!
Nick
-
BTW Chuff, glad you like the lights! Will give it a wash tomorrow and get some shots at BaD-VAG in daylight.
Done a bit of research on the springs and seems they're only drop 30mm at the front and 25m at the rear. Wishbones are now all spot on level at rest and it's settled a bit so I'm pretty happy. After all it's a daily and I want to enjoy driving it not terrified of arch rubbage and speed humps everytime I go out. If in the future I get a company car then I might well splash out on some Gaz coilovers and go a bit lower. That'll be after the 6 speed box and Torsen LSD go in it though. Then it'll get some TB's!

Cleaned this morning and then popped up Marcus's unit and re-fitted the rear spoiler. Drilled the holes in the spoiler, then drilled the boot, then tapped the boot so it bolts straight on. Job jobbed and I reckon the bolt's really finish it off!

Had a little road trip to WIM today with another mx5 owner off the hairdresser forum. Job done on Alex's car but mine has a stuffed upper ball joint which means I'll have to fix that and take it back to have the set up finished. Got to hand it to the guys at WIM though, top service and they said they'll finish my car off when I take it back and still apply the November forum discount.

Nice photo's.
Talk to me about rust? Went and had a look at a MK1 this morning with a college mate who owns one. Slight bit of rust on a sill but he was absolutely adament that the inner sill would be gone and would need loads of work.
How can you tell?
My best friend (who is actually a girl i.e born with a girl thingy) wants one and reckons I should too.
-
He's right. If they rotten on the outiside they're dust inside. They rot from the inside out where the water from the hood drains out through the sills. The drain holes in the sills get clocked and they fill with water. I've driven one where you could hear it sloshing around.
Best bet is an Eunos over an MX5 as being imports they've generally spent less time in our salty winters.
Nick
-
Ah right cheers mate. :)
Only trouble is Eunos = ££££ on insurance over even a 1.8 MX-5.
-
Specialists don't charge any different. Try Sky, Greenlight or Flux.
Nick
-
The boot is too small on the Mx5, sorry.

I love mx5's
i went out in a ek 1.6 vtec civic tonyt.. I was inpressed
jdm is taking over me

Pffft, done a weeks holiday in cornwall with 2 of us no probs. Going to France for 2 weeks in one next year. Packing. You're doing it wrong.

Nick
Expensive insurers tho.
No one will accept business NCB. Admiral are the only affordable ones and it goes over 5k on a Eunos.
Cheers tho. I reckon I'll be buying one Feburary ready for July.

I suppose it's expensive in saying that my modified MK3 with a 16V engine is £1156.
But then an 8v MK3 GTI is like £2.2k and a TDI MK4 130 is like £2.4

Time for coilies then?

It's already fitted with Koni adjustables. I had a play withthe damper settings this morning and it seems that maybe they had somewho un adjusted themselves. I will monitor and see what happens.
New Koni sports are £130 each. Ouch!

Nope, it's deffo dead. I might be in luck though as a chap on the MX5 forum thinks he has some used ones in his workshop. Waiting to hear back.
Nick

Also found a chap in Newbury who rebuilds Koni dampers that could be an even cheaper fix.

According to a survey in this months practical classic only 7% of readers think the MX-5 will be an icon in 50 years time. But as a caveat...
...On the opposite page is the answer to "How old are you"
Under 30: 4%
30-39: 10%
40-49: 24%
50-59: 30%
60-69: 26%
70+: 6%
Although the MX-5 does make in in - as a new entry - into the top 10 classics owned by readers.
Comes in at number 9. Golf is number 8.
So there you go.

2 cars in the top 10. Go Me!

Bit of an update.
I've blown a rear damper which has made the car all but undrivable, it's very sketchy! I've also sourced a good council garage to keep the Golf in when it's finished and bought the MG ZT as a daily. Sooooooooooooo...........the MX5 will be going into the council garage tomorrow as in there I can pull the rear dampers off and leave it on stands without upsetting my neighbors outside our flat. The dampers will then be going to a chap in Newbury to be rebuilt.
Sadly it looks like the Golf won't be anywhere near ready for the Trackday I have booked on the 25th May, therefore I shall be doing it in the 5. This means as well as sorting the dampers I need to give it a good service and going over before then to make it sure it's in tip top shape. I'll also have to see if my track wheels and tyres for the Golf fit OK, they should do as they're 15x7 4x100 ET25 fitted with Toyo R888s.

I never understood why they build garages which when you park a car in there you can't get out of it?!

Built when cars where smaller? :undecided:
I did a guy's Merc C class and his was parked in a similar garage; it was easier to get in and out of it via the sunroof
-
The builders excuse is "nobody uses them for cars, just storing stuff".
But if you make the garages as small as the houses on new builds , you can fit more on the plot, and make more money.
:lipsrsealed:

Spoke to the suspension chaps today and it'll cost £40 per shock to get them rebuilt which is good value and the turnaround should be about 3 days. Better try and get them off sharpish and drop them off (they're local to my office which is handy).

Dampers dropped off for refurbishment, should be ready for collection on Thursday.

Damper re-furb fail. Seems one of them has a damaged rod which needs replacing. The part is expensive (finding out how expensive tomorrow) and is unlikely to be done in time to get them back on the car for Japfest.

Refurbished dampers collected and rear spoiler has been resprayed after it discoloured. Going to have to pull a late one tonight to get it all back together and clean for Japfest tomorrow!

Bit of an update. Booked on a trackday at Castle Combe a week tomorrow which was supposed to be in the Golf but that's not gonna happen, the 5 is therefore stepping up. Got myself a new set of alt belts as mine are a bit persihed as well as some yellow stuff pads as the current ones are down to the last 3mm and are only green (poop) stuff. Will be giving it a service, fitting the brakes and a brake fluid change this weekend.
Nick

4.5 hrs to get in!! that's a long queue
how was the track action?

Yellow stuff pads fitted.
Aux and PAS belt replaced.
Oil and filter changed.

Just need to adjust the belts today as I think I over tensioned them and they whine a bit and going to bleed the brakes to firm up the peddle.
Discovered both my rear tyres are mullered (Video might show why ) so going to have to swap a pair off the golf before the trackday on friday.

Any ideas why that damper keeps going? Is it just the seals each time?
-
No idea at the moment, goign to drop it back to the refurber and get his diagnosis.
Nick
-
Good news! The damper is being repaird for free. It seems he hadn't realised I was running small bump stops and the replacement shaft he fitted was not the best and it's letting oil past the seals when the damper is nearing the end of it's travel. A different shaft is being sourced and fitted and should have the damper back early next week.

To do the full Horney, you need to buy both of these.
And a Rover 75.

And a mini.
Anyhooo, suspension fixed and sideways antics have resumed.
MOT booked for 18th, likely suspension of sideways antics.
Nick
-
Not updated this in a while!
Failed on:
* NSF tyre (knew this anyway)
* Sidelight (knew this)
* NSF lower balljoint cover split
Ball joint replaced, wheel of golf thrown on and bulbs replaced. 12 months ticket received!
A few days later throwing it into a roundabout something broke. Turns out it was the OSF anti roll bar drop link which had snapped at the weld. Order some new ones and will get round to fitting eventually. Driving tiaround still making some quality banging noises and it's got a dry bearing in the PAS pump as well which makes a racket. 2nd hand pump on it's way to me at the moment (New one is £450!!!!!!!!!).
So yeah, need to do a bit of spannering but I've done 12,000 thrashed sensless miles + a trackday since the last MOT so pretty happy to be honest. I just wish it stop bloody raining so I can go topless more often.

Great review, I love Chris Harris. I'm with him on the 205gti, but hey each to their own. And to be fair, it would have been nice to see him actually push the car a little bit. Still as he says for £2k what other options have you got, that offer as much as the mx5......

Well the Golf progress is out of my hands currently. I've bought lots of stuff for it but until it leaves the paint shop I can't actually do anything. I've even agreed rent on half a workshop from Spetember onwards for it.
As for the 5 the Roundals look good in a retro racer kind of fashion and it competes in the odd AutoSolo so they're actually semi useful.

more like it....same price as a 1.0 or 5.0 on that year, none of the emission crap of post 2001 cars
Below 1549cc one band and over another band. ;)

Went out and got some more today.

Bit of an update.
It's been to Spa and back for the 6 hour classic weekend and done another trackday. Vid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iANBxUYdaxY
With the Golf being broken for parts this is now my main focus for track action. This winter the plan is for Coilovers, poly bushes, Wilwoods up front, 6 speed box and a Torsen LSD to replace the VLSD currently on it. That should see it sorted on the handling front and then I'll start collecting bits for BOOOOOOOOOST in the form of a supercharger. I'm not wanting to go big power but enough to drag it up the straights with a bit of pace to match how quick you can peddle it through the corners. Reliability is key as well so keeping the boost levels tame will ve good for this.
-
As stated by anyone who ever took an MX-5 on track.
-
Supercharger kit bought and due in a couple weeks.

You are bloody mad!
-
Yes.
Forgot to mention just fitted some GazGold Pro coilovers as well. Initially fitting was an arse as they're a refurbished set off a Max5 race car so weren't labeled up. All now fitted OK and handling and ride height much improved.

Love it Nick

I do wish you wouldn't use your Flickr account to put nasty photos like those up - I have a lovely pretty stream and I can always tell your photos these days, because they look NASTY

Lol. I only Flickr phone pics if I want to use them for forum postings later.
Unless you're just moaning about the constant jap car pictures regardless of which camera they're shot with.

Thanks to Nick at Skuzzle Motorsport we are just about there. It runs, goes like the clappers, it pops, it bangs, it whines and it chirps. Sadly the injectors run out of head room at 6,000rpm despite being 1.8 Items so I'm sourcing some RX8 ones. Once they're in and another mapping session we should hopefully see the full use of the rev range as the limiter is currently set at 6,200.

you sir are one naughty mother fcuker!

I hope your bottom end is strong!

I hope your bottom end is strong!
That's a bit personal!
These old MX5's lumps are good for 300bhp on standard internals so no worries there. They were originally fitted in the 323 turbo so they're a turbo engine without a turbo from the factory.

They are quite amusing.
Now booked onto 2 AutoSolos in April to get those competitive juices flowing. :)

Team Horney Racing eh?

Did some tinkering today. IL Motorsport 40% increase stiffness front ARB links:
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2892/13519123215_69c604c7d3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/mAD3ki)
Fitted, no pics.
During fitting the charger I had to lose the coolant bottle so ordered a bag instead and fitted and wired that up today:
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3677/13519117205_c45487ecf2.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/mAD1xF)
Next up bigger injectors and the first Autosolo of the year next weekend.
-
Also organized a breakfast meet this morning:

So it's not just the owners on a catheter! :lipsrsealed:
-
Ooooohhhh!!!! Charger! (and brekkie of course!!)
-
Another day of tinkering. Swapped out the 1.8 injectors for yellow RX8 ones and popped it on the Dyno for a retune:
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3704/13649690955_a44545b5ee_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/mNbeze)
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7181/13650040464_735954eee8.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/mNd2tf)
And the results:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7375/13649714103_a4b621ca21.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/mNbmsk)
So a rough 190bhp at the flywheel which is a considerable gain over 115bhp at the fly they have as standard.
Now I've got the full use of the revs (was limited to 6200 on the old injectors due to leaning out) it is much, much quicker. Tomorrow is my first AutoSolo of the year so looking forward to trying it out in some competitive motorsport in it's new boosted guise.
-
Farnborough and District Motor CLub April AutoSolo done and dusted. I finished 13th overall, 5th in class and 3rd fastest in an mx5. Nick of Skuzzle Motorsport was also driving my car and came 9th overall, 4th in class and 2nd fastest in an mx5. He beat me by 10 seconds overall. Pretty chuffed and the car was brilliant all day. Nick even got a trophy. Vids to follow.

Did the dyno lot give you AFR and Boost Pressure graphs as well?
No I didn't bother asking for that as we'd just set up the AFR's on the mapping and boost with a supercharger is pretty flat anyway. Should still be in the computer though so next time I'm done I'll get him to run one off. :)

I was supposed to be competing in another AutoSolo tomorrow but the car has suffered a complete clutch release bearing failure. I initially thought it was hydrolic related but after changing the slave and master cylinders the problem wasn't improved and actually started getting worse. I knew fitting the charger would eventually kill the clutch but the clutch itself is still holding fine, just a poxy £12 bearing! Really gutted and I have a trackday booked on the 28th as well.
Now I need to decide what the hell to do. The box has to come off so now's the time to put a decent clutch and flywheel from Flyin' Miata in but I'm looking at the thick end of £500 plus labour as I don't have the facilities to be able to drop the box and spend a couple of days on it. So do I go for it and batter my credit or do I just replace it with a standard 1.8 setup saving myself lots of money but risk it not being up to the job for years to come? To make maters worse Flyin' Miata recommend 500 miles run in on their clutch with no full throttle. Not sure how I can get that shipped here, fitted and rack up 500 miles in 15 days!!!!!
Urrggghhh
-
I bit the bullet and ordered a Competition Clutch stage 4 paddle clutch and the Ultralight Flywheel combo for £585 delivered. Ouch!
Now to try and get it fitted in time to run it in before the trackday on the 28th.
-
Just run it in on the track... then report back :lipsrsealed:
-
Just run it in on the track... then report back :lipsrsealed:
lol, I'm not ruining a £350 clutch plate on a trackday. I nee dto do 500 miles on it so I forsee a cuple late night run outs round the country lanes of hampshire to bed it in.
-
mate ended ho having to buy a brand new bike 2 days before he went round europe - had to do 500 miles then have it serviced.
bike collected Friday 9am. first service satdee 9am on a boat from dover sundee 11am
m4 junction 12 to 19 , 19 to 12 and Repeat

Motorways are no good for this as I have to have plenty of changes and keep the boost to a minimum. So essentially I'll be out being a sunday driver round the back roads. I might have to put a stopper on the throttle peddle though as my self control is not that great.
-
he was the same, nowt over 2k, but was up down the box like a fiddlers elbow
Rolling road  team effort :lipsrsealed:

So, yeah, not the release bearing then:

Killed that good and proper. The bolt heads have been mullered by the spring as well. No wonder it was a pig to get a gear.
New Ultralight flywheel:

I didn't get a picture of the 6 puck paddle clutch as we were in a hurry.
Massive thanks to Nick at Skuzzle Motorsport for working a late one last night to fit all this after I finished work. The man is a legend.

Trackday in 8 days, much to do.
The CC clutch is now bedding in nicely with loads of bite and having covered 200 miles I've started giving it some beans. Very impressed. With the lightened flywheel 1st and 2nd gear are now ballistic!
Today I change the box, diff and turret oil:

My to do list for next monday looks something like this:
* Fit Mocal oil cooler and Filter Sandwich plate
* Fit Oil temp take off sandwich plate with above
* Oil and Filter change
* Wheel alignment check and adjust
* Swap rear tyres left to right to even out wear
* Fit gauge pod
* Fit and wire up boost and oil temp gauges
* New plugs and leads
I also have an exhaust blow which I suspect has come from removing the echuast to change the clutch. If I get time I'll investigate this but it's pretty low down the priority list.

Big thanks to Javelin Trackdays (https://www.facebook.com/JavelinTrackdays) for an excellent day at Castle Combe today. It was the first trackday since Skuzzle Motorsport (https://www.facebook.com/SkuzzleMotorsport) assited with all things supercharger and fitted the Competition Clutch (https://www.facebook.com/CompetitionClutch) 6 puk and Flywheel. The car was epic, only let down but the sacks of meat behind the wheel. There's a few things now to patch up or improve and the next stop, back to Castle Combe on the 10th May for Japfest.
Anyway have a couple of fly by vids with my Dad at the wheels:

Looking good
Got my first day of the year booked recently.
-
A few things to fix after the trackday.
1) Exhaust is now blowing like a trooper. It's blown the gasket out of the downpipe/decat flange. Booked in to an exhaust place on Tuesday morning. I hate trying to do exhausts myself.
2) I've got a suspension knock that's getting worse. I can't find anything wrong and it only happens under very heavy load on turn in. I suspect a worn wishbone bush somewhere, further investigation required.
3) Gearbox is sounding like a bag of spanner, not sure it's long for this world. One to keep an eye on.
4) One of the idler bearings for the charger belt is squealing. Replacements ordered as they look pretty old.
Japfest is this Saturday so decided it was time to give it a proper polish as the paint had gone really flat. Also the SPa Six Hours stickers really needed to be removed. I pulled them off and on the Satin black bonnet they left loads of marks so that got removed and rattle canned again. I also recently bought a front tow hook so that was sprayed up and fitted.

I've also put a roundel back on the bonnet as I had one spare form when I bought them last year.
Still a few jobs to do before next weekend like refit my yellow indicators which I've been meaning to do for ages and fit a dial cowl as I broke my old one trying to mod it for my Oil and Boost gauges.

Not updated this in a while, bad Horney!
It's been a busy few months of modify, race, break, repeat. Touch wood I have got over most of the niggles and reached a place where it should be reliable. I've probably jinxed it now.
The main news is that it is now fitted with a 15% reducer supercharge pulley combined with an Intercooler and a dump valve. This has meant that that lovely chap Nick at Skuzzle Motorsport has managed to tweak the map and give me 221bhp at the Flywheel. It's quite the weapon now.
Some pictures for you all.

2015 plans are to add a 6 speed box and Torsen LSD from a MK2, some uprated Anti Roll bars and go Sprinting and Hill climbing. I also need to get some bigger injectors as they're currently running at 112% Duty Cycle at 6500rpm. OK on the road but not so good for holding it high in the revs at an event.

Looks fantastic Nick. I love it

Since fitting the smaller pulley I've had an issue with the injectors running at over 100% duty cycle at 6,500rpm and above. This is clearly not good!
Swapped out the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator and while there was an improvement it was still not great.
Fitted a 190lph Walbro along with a rewire running it straight from the battery via a relay triggered from the original loom and we have a result. Pressures at the rail back to what they should, no pressure creep with the stronger pump and on the RR it was considerably richer all the way through the revs. Nick tweaked the map and now I have good AFRs right up to the limiter and a fair bit of head room in the injector duty cycles. I can now use full revs for long periods without being terrified it's going to lean out blow itself to pieces.
We also swapped out all the lower wishbone bolts at the fron tot try and cure my clonk on heavy load right-handers. I've had the alignment set and so far no clonk although it's a bit slippy out at the moment to really throw the car around. Time will tell. A big thanks to Nick @ Skuzzle Motorsport for all his hard work as usual and also to the Wheel Alignment Centre in Southampton for setting the Geo, the car feels better than ever now.

Are the wheel alignment centre recommended then Nick? Need my Corrado setting up shortly as I'll be completely renewing/refurbing the running gear. I know these need to be done correctly so don't fancy taking it to protyre and the like!
-
Oh yes. He sets up a lot of race cars, 911 GT3s, Lambos, caterhams etc etc. If you go check out the walls of photos of all the awesome cars he's set up.
Best bit, its £50 for a full 4 wheel check and adjust and he makes you a coffee.

Originally my plan for this year was to pop a 6 speed box and a Torsen diff in this and go Hillclimbing and sprinting. There's been a change of plan involving this:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7373/16299058260_086e6247a8_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/qQhWaS)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/qQhWaS) by Nicholas R Horne (https://www.flickr.com/people/23064591@N08/), on Flickr
It's not mine but it's going to cost me money and has resulted in me booking my ARDS for a full race licence. This means a trimming of the budget for doing stuff in my mx5 this year and while I'm gong to try and do plenty of speed events the 6 speed and diff are now certainly on the back burner.
More on the mk2 in the coming weeks.

Yeah there's normally a pretty good turnout from the more exotic end at PH meets. It's nice to be able to see these cars up close and the owners are real petrolheads so have no worries about letting you have a sit in etc.

First AutoSolo of the year. Done.
Bit of a disaster frankly. Firstly I was not in the zone and in the three runs of the first course I went wrong every time, dumb ass. I improved on the second course runs and only went wrong on one of the three, sadly due to the earlier naviagtional issues I was well down the pecking order (read, last out of 45). Lunch break arrived and we'd be warned the surface at this venue was super abbrasive. It was. My tyres, the only set I had with me, were pretty much done. The rears were pretty worn but OK, the fronts were verging on the legal limit and I knew with that kind of wear rate the afternoon would see me down to the canvas. I decided to retire and go home having at least had fun in the morning.

Update time:
The Kumho tyres are excellent. So much more wet grip than the T1Rs, turn in and mid corner stability are also much improved. They also give much more feedback and are more progressive on and over the limit of grip. These are now my tyre of choice for the 5 when not needing semi slicks.
Sadly I am having issues with the car at the moment. The fuel pump keeps cutting out leaving me with no go. Initially I thought this might be relay related as myself and Skuzzle wired in a new loom for the Walbro pump but I replaced the relay and it still cuts out occasionally. It's very odd as the car dies and you can spin it over on the starter but no fire up, you can hear the pump is not running. If you let the immobiliser kick in and then turn it off you the pump still doesn't run on II on ignition but does jump into life when you kick the starter over. Now this would point to the immobiler being an issue but when that is on the starter doesn't even work. I can't understand how it could be half immobilising the car? Very frustrating as although I know a quick fix for when it happens it doesn't help if it does it on track and I want it bloomin fixed.
This brings me onto track based activities. I am booked on the FDMC Dimanche Sprint on May 3rd in Aldershot and the Abingdon CAR-nival Sprint on June 6th at Abingdon Airfield. Exciting times!

First Sprint is on May 3rd and I have a few bits that need doing before then, one of which was an MSA compliant Beam Breaker/Timing Strut. I got this one off eBay and it's adjustable (it has to be a certain distance from the ground) and well happy with it.

Final bit of prep for my first ever Sprint tomorrow.
BBS with Federal 595 RSRs fitted
New Harnesses in and adjusted
Battery earth lead taped yellow
Race numbers fitted (badly!)
Took it for a spin and the federals are horrid when cold and less grippy than my road tyres! THis does not bode well for a cold wet sprint tomorrow where tyre warming is not allowed. I'll see how I get on but I might have to change to Kuhmo HS51s for the Abingdon CAR-nival Sprint.

I am an idiot. Got all my race gear and helmet packed, all my paperwork sorted and went to bed. Then had a horrible realisation. There was something I had missed off my list to do on the car. An oil catch tank. You can't run in Sprints or Hillclimbs with an open breather system, the requirement is for a minimum of a 1 litre properly plumbed in catch tank. A drinks bottle and some pipe don't cut it.
Gutted.

Next up was Abingdon Motorsport CAR-nival Sprint yesterday which was awesome. I learnt the car is brilliant and I am rubbish. Finished 10th out of 11 in my class but I was up against 250bhp Minis, a 400bhp Mustang, a 350bhp S14 and a Jaguar XKR (which I beat) amongst others. It was also the first run for the new support vehicle.

Here's a vid of all my runs with a few interesting moments of too much throttle out of the bends. Sprinting is a tough discipline as you need to be on it 100% from the off which is scary on cold tyres and in a car you've not driven hard in it's current setup. Learnt a lot and looking forward to the next event.

It's Lizzie's old one as she's bought a MK3 2.0 Sport. Seemed a shame to sell it on to some kid who'd turn it into a "Skid car innit" so I gave her some cash for it and plan to tidy it up and power round in it.
For this interested it's a standard 10th Anniversary SE which means it comes with:
1.8 16v 143bhp
6 Speed manual
TorSen LSD
Bilstien Dampers
Stiff springs
Half leather with Alcantara centres
Chrome wheels (much bling, many shine, so wow)

The throttle butterfly spindle snapped but luckily at 16:45 right at the end of the day. I had to get the AA to take me home.

Just ordered at set of these in 15x7 ET25. 3 - 4 weeks until delivery.
Should look good with the Wilwoods and improve handling being lighter than the Compos.
-
Nice are they mag alloy?
-
No idea, but they're about the lightest wheels you can get for the 5. They do two versions and these are the lighter ones used by the Spec Miata MX5 racers in the states.

Urrrgh, bloody old cars. I was supposed to be going to the MX5 National Meet tomorrow and be on the Moss Europe stand. No chance now. Stripped the old Throttle Body off and as suspected one broken throttle spindle.

The replacement arrived yesterday but as is often the way with used parts it's been stripped of pretty much everything.

I went to swap over the various bits and rounded off 4 bloody screws. I don't have the time to drill them out or find replacements before tomorrow. Rather than take the MK2 instead I'm going to soldier on with this and get as far as I can.
Sometimes I really hate my hobby.

Update time.
Managed to find the time (i.e took a day off work!) and headed down to Skuzzle Motorsport in Winchester to steal one of his lifts for the day and fit my WIlwoods.

As probably mentioned earlier in the thread I realised after I ordered these they wouldn't fit behind my beloved Compomotive MLs. For the time being the car is running on some Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2s I swiped off our Max5 racer.

I've ordered some of the same wheel but in Gold which I'm waiting to arrive.
Today there was an organised run out to a pub and for lunch and then to Goodwood via some nice roads which seemed like the perfect opportunity to bed the brakes in.

You should be the best handling car out of the lot, but I expect some of those cubic inches and forced induction engines might make up for crabbing corners and bad driving.
Should be fun though, underdog and all that....
-
I reckon the Cooper will be your biggest threat Nick.

The cooper always wins that class, it's not standard and the guy is proper handy!
Is that Sis pic from Stonor park years ago?

Yes that's your van man. I believe that's your arm in shot as you dish out the butties.

Those were the days!
I have an unhealthy addiction to stickers and decided some Spec Miata inspired MAZDA stickers were in order.

Yesterday was race day! I took the Mazda to the Farnborough and District Motor Club Sprint Royale. Running in class 5 for road going cars over 2000cc (the supercharger makes it 1600cc x 1.6 = 2560cc for equalization) was going to be tough. In my class were 7 runners including a supercharged Mustang GT, an MG SV and an S14 200SX. My main target of the day was a Mini Cooper S JCW as we're both 1.6 Supercharged and similar power to weight as he has a bit more power than me.
Arrived and ready for scrutineering:

The Mustang retired with a broken gearbox and I managed to beat the mini and bagged 2nd in class and 25th overall out of 80+ entries. I even beat a Metro 6R4!!!!!!

A cracking pic from Sunday’s sprint.

Having ended the season in this car on a real high with the 2nd in class trophy it’s time to focus my attention on 2016. Winter is a time for plans, upgrades, improvements and repairs. The next 5 weeks will be consumed by the Race Of Remembrance prep and competing there in Skuzzle’s MK2 Aero Monster but after that attention will be back on this wee beasty.
For 2016 my aim is to compete in all three Farnborough and District Motor Club Sprints (Dimanche, Abingdon CAR-nival and Royale) as well as at least one competitive round at Gurston Down Hillclimb. This time I’m wanting some top step action in the class as well. With that in mind I have the following list to work through before April. It’s a tall order budget wise when factoring in I also want to run the MAX5 racer in a couple of rounds of the MAX5 championship.
• Rust repairs to the sills (Rust really isn’t lighter than carbon fibre).
• Repair/replace cracked peddle box.
• Some more sprint/hill suitable rubber with more grip from cold.
• Get the car set up and corner weighted.
• Adjustable cam pulleys for a bit more power.
• 2.5 Sport rear brakes.
• Finish plumbing the extinguisher in and battery cut off pulls (it won’t make me faster but BecauseRaceCar).
• Purchase and fit some proper 5 point 3” harnesses.
• Adjust the seat to lean back a bit more.
• Fit passenger bucket seat (lighter than standard seat and I need to run both seats in my class as per the regs).
• Steering wheel hub spacer to improve the driving position.
• Fab up and fit some door bars to the Cusco/Safet21 4 point cage for a bit more chassis rigidity.
There’s probably some more stuff to add to that list that I have forgotten.

My new wheels arrived a couple of weeks ago and I finally got around to getting the tyres swapped over and the wheels fitted today.
Off with the old:

On with the new:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/766/22249089379_cb87e350b4_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/zU5p8i)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/zU5p8i) by Nicholas Horne (https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/), on Flickr

Exactly the same, just a different colour. The white ones will be returned to their proper home on the Max5 race car.
I've also picked up some vernier cam pulleys:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/664/21813172104_93ae79ff88_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/zeyd7d)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/zeyd7d) by Nicholas Horne (https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickhorne/), on Flickr
The plan with these is to get some custom ground cams from Kent and with these bolted to them see how much more power we can get out of the old girl. Currently at 190bhp-ish at the wheels and hoping to get her over 200bhp at the wheels. This will be a winter project along with a lot of other things that need doing ahead of the 2016 Sprint season.
Before all that kicks off there's the small matter of The Race of Remembrance 1000KM endurance race at Anglesey in this weapon:

Tune in to MotorsTV over the weekend of 7th and 8th of November to watch it spitting 3 foot flames live on TV. The start of the race is Saturday night 4pm - 7pm and the remainder 10am through to 4pm on the Sunday, I believe the coverage is non stop.

Build threads are great but for a while I've been wanting to do something a bit more. So with that in mind I have stared a blog.
https://teamhorneyracing.wordpress.com
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/Horney_mini/Screen%20Shot%202015-10-27%20at%2020.51.35.png) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/Horney_mini/media/Screen%20Shot%202015-10-27%20at%2020.51.35.png.html)
Initially I'm just spamming it up with posts to document the last 4 years with the car. Once that's completed I'm hoping to do a weekly article. It could be based on an event attended, a mod completed or a thought piece on something MX5/motorsport related.
I hope it's of use/interest to some people.

Kent Cams are currently regrinding a set of camshafts for me. We've spent a lot of time trying to work out the best profiles for duration and lift as well as removing overlap. Hoping to get them in and dialled in in a few weeks time. The aim is to break the 200whp (approx 240 Flywheel HP) figure.
First Sprint in this thing is end of April so plenty of time to tickle a bit more poke out of it. I also need to fix a few things and give it a service.
It's also gone very rusty and needs some quite major sill repairs. :(

Amazing work and great thread bro!

Sadly the tin worm had gone to work on this old girl and the shell is beyond sensible economical repair (cheaper to buy a clean car than repair it). Also I'm bored of the supercharger and the fact it puts me in horrible classes for sprinting. 570bhp Mustangs are not the best match for 220bhp MX5.
So I went out today and bought this:

The plan is to swap the following into it from the green one:
Gaz Coilovers
Jackson Racing ARBs
Wilwood 4 posts
Wheels
Strut Brace
Under car braces
Oil Cooler
Ali Rad
TorSen Diff
6 Speed Box
peddle box
Clutch Hydraulics
Ultra light Flywheel
FM Happy meal clutch
4 point Carbing Cage
TR Lane Harness bar
Spark Sprint 5 seats
Harnesses
Momo Prototipo Steeringwheel
Tow Hooks
Fire Extinguisher
You'll notice no engine on that list. I need to source a MK2 1.8 lump for this little lot to bolt to:
