right after a few people asking me about how to run vag com on vista i thought i would make a user guide to help anyone with the problem.
First thing is to install the required vag com software from the ross tech website.
Once you have dont this right click the desktop icon and click on "properties"
Once you have clicked on properties a new box will open on the top of this box click on "compatability"... and then notice on neare the top of box there is a drop down list menu.. on this list select "Windows XP (service pack 2)"
and then near the bottom of the box you will see a tick box next to "run as administrator" tick this box.
this is how it should look>>>>
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh60/naveedali1/Untitled2.jpg)
click "ok" to save the settings you have just done.
Now connect your VAG COM cable but do not connect it to your car just to the laptop!
now go into control panel and click on "device manager"
Once you are in device manager you will see a long list of options ( dont get scared lol)... further down you will see an option saying "ports (COM &LPT) click on this option and another drop down option appear which is ur VAG COM cable...
Right click the drop down option and click on "properties"
a dialog box will oprn up on the box click on the "port settings" tab...
and then click on "advanced"option
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh60/naveedali1/lklk.jpg)
Once you have clicked on teh advanced option a new dialog box will open which will have a "com port number" drop down list... on tyhis click on either COM 1,2,3,4 which ever one is free!
click ok to save the settings now go and try it on your car and everything should be fine but remeber which "COM" u used in the device manager option and use that same "COM" on the test option on the VAG COM interface...
any probs PM me.

it's also worth checking the port settings when running VAGCOM in XP as mine defaults to COM8
To find the device manager go to the control panel & double click on System then click on the hardware tab.
-
cheers matey this sorted it! put the com prot to 1 and now sorted!

Sorry this is an old thread but I've been using VCDS 10.6 and all versions since on my Vista 32bit laptop. It installs perfectly and operates perfectly, they may have cleared up some bugs on the later versions.
