Help with my zero knowledge on car audio
« on: 07 April 2011, 12:56 »
Just bought my mk4 and so far I love it.  The only problem is the parcel shelf has two massive gaping holes in it....
In the future Id like to put a stealth shelf in and keep the oem look.
For now though I have just bought a couple of JBL 6 x 9 to fill the holes.  I would like to link them up to the oem headunit, but I have no clue how to do this.  I already have rear passenger speakers and didnt know how this would affect the setup.

Any help would much appreciated.

You will need an amp to power the 6x9's in the shelf.

And if you still have the standard VW head unit that's going to be difficult. Ideally you need to pick up a new headunit that has a pre-out to run an amp. Either that or buy a parcel shelf without holes in and sell the speakers you just bought.

hmmm.  My girlfriend runs 6 x 9's (came with her car) just with a jvc headunit.
Ideally I'd like to keep the oem look in the front, but if its not possible to run the 6 x 9's off it, I have a kenwood unit in my corrado I could steal.

Also she has clips between the 6 x 9 wiring and the wiring to the HU.  Any idea where I could get these?
Just means I can whip out the parcel shelf when I need to put my Mtb in the back.

You don't need an amp just disconnect the rear speakers and use the cabling for them.

thank you, exactly what I need.  Is it missions to get the wiring out of the rear speakers?  Will standard HU beable to power 6 x 9's?

what power are the 6x9s? standard manufacturer cabling is a bit sh!te imo, but will do the job fine, as mentioned, an amp will do a much better job and make the 6x9s more clearer, just to add, parcel shelves are flimsy and may break from the weight on them

It doesn't matter what power the speakers are. It's the amp that defines the current load on the cable.

The HU will put out the same watts whether a 10w or 1000w speaker are attached.

Output of hu will be between 10-30w rms.
