Hi all,
Been driving the Mrs's car about whilst i'm waiting for mine and i noticed her gearbox is sometimes difficult to go into Reverse and sometimes into 1st.
It's been like this for years apparently and just double dipping the clutch sorts it out.
Due a service next month at VW, but is it something like and gearbox oil change would fix?
Thanks

I think it's down to the design of the gearbox, I've had this on my GTI since I bought it, my TDI SE before that, and even a Fiesta SI I had suffered a similar problem.
It's unlikely VW with service the gearbox as they don't officially have a service schedule for it (designed to be fitted at production and left alone for life).

Very very common fault, i believe its the input shaft bearing that wears. We do no end of gearbox rebuilds at work for this issue, we have one on the ramp waiting to be finished and another one coming in Monday.

It's a full gearbox rebuild?! Damn... Better change the oil and start looking after my 'box!

usually just the one bearing to replace, or i think our engineer sometimes shims them. I'll try to get some pictures of the one we're doing next week.

Ah, cool. If I ever came to rebuilding my box I'd probably get a track friendly setup built instead for the time and effort.
