2012 golf gti chain tensioner
« on: 02 August 2021, 18:34 »
Hello
I am new to this forum and i am looking for some advice , regarding the chain tensioner . I have just purchased a 2012 (12) plate golf gti with 72k on the clock , so i was wondering if i need to have the chain tensioner replaced and that is enough , the car has good service history with it but no mention of the chain tensioner being changed . Did it affect this year ????? as i say its,i am new to all this , i had a mk2 gti back in the 90s  and always wanted another . i am open to any advice on what's the best thing to do , some people are saying have the chain and tensioner done with the water pump . Thanks in advance for any help and advice .

As above check my post on the thread linked too above.

The build date of the engine is shown on the label on top of the chain cover.

The chain maybe getting a bit stretched at this milage. This can be checked by someone with VCDS scan tool.

Chain stretch depends on how the car has been treated previously. Mine is on 87k miles owned from new and the timing is still within spec. If you have the latest tensioner then I would check the timing for chain stretch as Snoopy suggests using vcds or similar before making a decision on what steps to take. Some garages will do the check for you but check prices!
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.

I'm no mechanic but I've had my 2012 Mk6 for 6 years and it's been fine.  I do believe mine has the updated tensioner on it though as I had it checked a few years back because I got worried about it too!

Got it at 3 years old with 36k, now on just under 76k.
