I have read that it is possible to change the clutch plate bearing in a 93 gti 8v in 20ins and it costs about 20 quid. Can anyone confirm this is the case?? Thanks
-
you need the bearing and green box end cap..the clutch is different to normal cars as the bearing isn't with the plate as its under the green cap on the box side (bearing is about £10 and cap is £7)

no9 is the cap and no10 is the bearing

Thanks that is really helpful. As a novice mechanic could I do it myself or is a job for the professionals? How long should it take?

give yourself 30 mins at a very steady pace mate, easy job for novices like me and thee!
just keep really clean as ya go along and you'll be fine.
oh, and get the left hand side as high as ya can, just stops the gear box oil leaking everywhere!
a little will come out however1

hi i have got the end cap off but i cant seem to get the item no 12 the arm that holds the bearing in place to move and therefore release it. please help

Easy mate
un hook the clutch cable
there us a black plastic clip on the arm, flick it off, this allows the arm to drop out of your way!
Done!

thanks can see the clip and have removed it, but my clutch cable is attached by some rectangular rubber fitting and i cant seem to figure out how to remove it..... sorry if this is a bit thick of me.... thanks for helping!!!!!

There should be a big White clip on the cable, compress the cable down and clip the White clip in place, you can then slide the metal holder from underneath the arm, that should release the cable!
See broke vw.com, forgot there is a pic guide on there!!
