Is there a way i can check the coil packs to see if one is faulty?

disconnect each one in turn whilst the engine is on. If it changes the characteristic of the engine then it's not broken.

No, all it will do is struggle. Believe me these engines can take loads more abuse than just having a coil pack disconnected.
