Dave, my last Golf (2000 1.8t GTi) used to blow them quite often (not once a week though), but it was annoyingly often. A mate once spotted me and called me on the mobile to say both my rears were out and I only had the high level break light! I always went to the VW dealer to get new ones, but they still blew. My 2003 Golf hasn't blown any yet, I've had it from brand new and its on 34000 miles now! Sorry I can't help, but at least your not the only one with lights popping on a Mk4.

Its a shot in the dark, but, have the alternator output checked. If the diode pack has gone out of tolerance it may be throwing out too many volts or giving an unstable output.
Just a thought, HTH

Mine keep blowing too! Left one went in June and now the right one has just gone!! I just thought it was the trait of the MK4 ...!

Both of my break lights went within a week of each other ( and a front headlamp ). I checked the output with a multimeter and everything was a-ok.
Nothing has blown since, though.... I just put it down to them all reaching the end of their lifetime together!
