screaching from back wheels
« on: 20 January 2008, 16:09 »
Hi new to here but I have developed a problem with my mk5 golf gti.
There seems to be a screaching coming from around the rear wheels, can't really tell where exactly its coming from but roundabout the guard around the rear disk.   :undecided:
Sounds as if something is running out and screaches as its turning if you know what I mean.
Has anyone else suffered from anything similar, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

I have had what sounds like this problem.

If you go out to the car with a long screw driver and press the metal guard behind the brake disc preferably at the bottom.
I expect you will find a stone will fall out, it happened to me a while back after traveling on a new tarmac road on the way to work.
The stone some how gets in to the gap between the rear of the disc and the guard. A push or two with the screw driver, pushing the guard away from the disc should allow the stone to fall free.

If its not this then get it checked out.

PS The screeching is from the disc guard vibrating due to the stone spinning around against the thin guard.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades. Especially if your teammates are bad guessers.

Hi Sean and Welcome to the forum

How old is the GTI?

How many miles have you done?

When (if at all) did you have the last service?

This happened on my last GTi, and it was just a stone trapped in the disc guard

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

It was brand new in July, has only done 1055 miles so no service yet!
Just had a go at shaking the guard, I didnt see or hear anything fall out but took it a wee spin and it seems to have cleared up.
Obviously its still under warranty an its booked in next week just to make sure its nothing else.
Thanks for all the help...........could see myself sticking around

Did you go through any shallow floods or standing water recently, that can cause the rear guard to get pushed in toward the disc as well.

Happened to me as well on a road that had just been resurfaced.
If the disc guard doesn't make a nice ping when pressed and released,
there's probably something stuck between it and the rear face of the disc.
I had stones come out from a front and a rear wheel when the guard was pressed away from the disc.

Same thing happened my R - was amazing the noise a stone could cause and you wonder how it could ever get in there!

I had the same thing, only it wasn't a trapped stone, it was the mother-in-law.

Imagine our embarrassment on finding that we'd dragged her 200 miles from Manchester after her skirt got trapped in the door while she was waving us off last weekend.
