MOT quick question
« on: 01 April 2021, 17:26 »
Hi all. It’s been quite some years since I had a car for more than 3 years, but on 3rd May, my GTI will be 3 years old. That mean my car tax is due at the end of this month. As the first MOT date is strictly the week after my tax is due, will I need to MOT the car before the end of April to be able to tax it, or will DVLA let me tax it without one (with it due the following week)?

You can get your MOT done any time from 4th April and still keep the same renewal date. If you get the MOT done early enough you won't be risking the DVLA system not being up to date with your MOT status when you come to tax it.

Also, getting it done early will give you more time to get it sorted if it fails for any reason (unlikely but not impossible) before your current MOT and warranty expire.

I always get my MOT done early and as close as possible to a month before it’s due, so if it does fail, then it can be repaired and re-tested in good time - before the MOT due date. As Guzzle has said, with the first MOT, it’s worth getting it done early so in the unlikely event it fails on something that’s covered under warranty, it can be fixed free of charge.

If @Sootchucker’s MOT is due on 03/05/2021 and he got it carried out, say two weeks before the due date (19/04/2021), this doesn’t adversely affect the expiry date on the MOT cert; the MOT station should show the dates on the cert as 19/04/2021 to 03/05/2022.

In answer to Sootchucker’s question, I think you can tax it without MOT as this is not due until after the tax expires.
I remember having this issue in the past though can’t remember what I did!

Last Monday 22nd I tried to pay tax one of my vehicles at work online, it wouldn’t let me tax it as the MOT was due on 31st March. On the tax reminder it had printed in red that MOT was required to be able to tax the vehicle. Once the MOT was completed on 23rd the tax system allowed payment.

My wife’s car the tax paid by DD and she had a letter said that the DD would be cancelled if the vehicle was not MOT’d, this was missed due to the Covid changes for MOT and she forgot to tell me 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣. MOT that day and DD still active.

I think the answer is above. Just get your MOT done at first opportunity within 4 weeks of the due date to preserve the original anniversary, then you don’t have anything to worry about, and as said above gives you time to sort any problems that may arise.

The rule is that you must have a valid MOT or exemption on the day that the new tax disc starts- your tax would’ve been due on 1st April- so you need an MOT.

OP should be able to tax the vehicle without MOT- for example if there’s a practical reason he needs to defer it.
