Urgent help possible dead car :(
« on: 08 February 2019, 13:19 »
Hi all long time since i've had to post on here but i need some expert help!

So couple weeks ago my AGU gti started running lumpy with no power. Turned out it was the ignition amplifier which sorted that issue. Along with this i changed the spark plugs as they needed doing anyway.

Week later driving along changed gear and the engine died! Wont start! Back in the garage they changed the cam sensor and it started. Drove home cut out dead again!

So the garage came out to the car and saw a fuse had blown so changed that got it running then bang it died again. Another fuse blown! The garage are washing their hands of it saying the amount of work to find whats wrong is not worth it on a car this old!

Need some desperate help! Is it worth taking it to the dealers or shall i cut my losses and break it?

Have you had it scanned to see if there's any fault codes?

I'm sure there'll be a common issue for these, isn't there a box by the battery with a load of power connections that get water in and cause issues sometimes ... might have made that up re Mk4s mind

Don't take it to a dealer, it'll cost you a fortune

So just got it on the scanner results above.

I know the passenger door doesnt work on central locking and the alarm horn doesnt sound all the time these issues have been on going for years!

Not sure about the airbag issue the voltage thing is usually if the batterys been unplugged right?

No codes in the engine!??! Baffled!!

I cop some silly stuff with my MK4 from time to time as well and this is what I always do first...

Remove the battery leads and give them a good clean...leave them off for about 20 mins or so. Flip the lid on the black plastic box that sits on the top of the battery and check that all the connections are clean and tight...any problems in there will be very obvious.
Make sure there is no moisture in that box and give it a good dose of WD40 before closing it again.

Then I trace back any and all leads from that top box and make sure they are connecting properly to whatever they component or earth they are supposed to. You might be surprised at what you find!

Re connect the battery, start up and go for a drive...keep your fingers crossed. May not solve your problem, but it won't cost you anything to try.

So the crap garage I took it to have finally told me what fuse keeps blowing.

It's the ECU fuse. Changed the ECU with my old one and the same thing happens.

It seems once the car is under load it blows the fuse!?

MAF is fine, lambda is fine, ignition amp is brand new, coils are fine (although one does get really hot)

Really need help on this

I'd be looking at the cam sensor they changed first, most of the time its what work was done most recent that causes an issue.

Take it you gapped the plugs right etc?
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

All fixed now and she's back on the road!

Turned out to be faulty wiring to the coil packs which kept blowing them and subsequently shorting out other systems. The garage I took it to got though 6 brand new coils before figuring it out.

Glad she's fixed now and back
