What type of wheels can my Mk3 take?
« on: 07 January 2019, 14:45 »
Hi all,  I was looking for a place thinking it was 2005, remember when people used to leave the house and not sit on facebook all night?  Yeah well trying to find a place I can take my car too and where they have a large stock of different wheels to go though until I find something I like and know fits seems impossible.

So,  im taking it buying wheels is an online experiencing these days??  Sigh!

So if that is the case what fittings do I need?  For 17" wheels what profile size tyre would my mk3 take? I dont want anything over the top.

Also

Anyone tell me what.....

The ofset is?

And

The stud pattern please.
My new GF gives me no problems!  Unlike ALL of the rest!!  She's only 21, black and extremely sexy. Sure she may have a slight drinking problem but nothing is perfect right?   Her name is Vicky (The VR6) Highline and I am madly in love.

Mk3 Golfs have either 4x100 or 5x100 pcd with a centre bore of 57.1mm

Best bet is to have look on forums / google images etc to find a Mk3 golf on a set of rims you like, then hunt a set down.

Think ive decided on  a set of Audi TT 17 inchers

Anyone know if they will just directly fit?

Also I wouldn't want an Audi badge on mine.  Id want VW centres.  Is that do doable?

Hi,  Got some 6 spoke Audi TT wheels  or a Mk 1 TT.

I have to confess im not up on the working os cars but trying to learn fast.

I took the wheel to a garage that specialises in wheel restoration.  They tried to replace my Mk3 VR6 Highline standard 15" wheels with the 17s but with the standard tyres that came on the TT wheels they wouldn't fit.

The guy at the garage says I need to keep the overall wheel circumference of the original wheel otherwise it will knock the speedo out and such.  So since I have gained 2 inches on my new wheels the tyre need to have a smaller rim?  Is that right?

Secondly as he had every tire but in stock he hasent been able to show me the tyre on there.  He wanted to try a worn out tyre to see what I thought before buying in 4 x tyres that will fit.  Seems nice as opposed just taking my money.

The guy fitting these wheels inst a golf expert and usually deals with much newer cars than a 20 year old.  He seems spot on and has a healthy wheel restoring business.  But he wondered about the right size for the tyre, so I thought Id ask here.

Any advice on what I need to do appreciated.

This guy is seriously worried about your speedo being out by a couple of mph? This is the problem with mechanics that work on run of the mill crap all day, they are instantly horrified by the idea of someone maybe putting a non factory spec'd tyre on their car !! Your speedo will be wrong from factory anyway [they all are], so all you have to do is check your speed on a GPS app and see where your speedo is at 30mph etc.

You will need lower profile tyres for sure to fit under the arches, as you've found. As always, a search of the interwebs to find pics of cars that look how you want yours to, then see what size tyres they have. Having never run 17s myself I can't advise, but on a 16"x7" rim I always go for 195.40s as these look good.

I presume you are lowering the car too?

Hello mate,

Thanks so much for the info.

This is what I want.   My VR6 is the black 3 door also.  Sadly the guy who owns it doesn't exist on the forum any-more / hasent owned the car for a decade.

......So I copied the wheels. (Or so I think I did.)

I am happy to lower it a bit but felt getting the wheels on first and seeing what I had to play with was the first thing to do?  Is that right mate?

What tyres do you think they are.

I'd be more worried if the wheel specialist didn't warn you and just be "yeah mate, be alright"

225/45/17 that come on those wheels are way out. 205/40/17's are the right size for the mk3. They rears might catch the arches ever so slightly - I did the same back in 1999
