Yay or nay?
« on: 23 September 2013, 09:12 »
Neighbor has informed me he's selling his MK4 TDi. I told him to give me first refusal which he has done just it came up far quicker than I thought/hoped for.

£1500
1.9TDI 130

Quick as a startled cat, really absolutely flies. Gotta have a map on it but the owner doesn't know himself although he's sure the previous owner might have. Been totally reliable. I stuck genuine front arms on it, Lemforder top mounts and Lemforder rear axle bushes on it this year. Cambelt was done 20k ago. Did the alternator pulley a while back.

147k miles I think but the thing drives amazing. Has full steering wheel controls, full screen on the dash and a 6 speed box. The displayed MPG is amazing and I know it does well.

Has corrosion on the front wing, I'm hoping/wondering if there's someway I can get my dealer who I'm pretty friendly with to push VW into a repair, it's on an 02 plate.

The only gripe is it's for the missus mainly and being a GT TDI for some reason she's expensive to get insured on it. Is affordable it's just a lot more than a non GT TDI etc. But I really like the car and know it well. It would be a full service and change a cracked headlight as soon as it came as well as discs and pads all round, stops fine, pads are fine, discs have a lip and they squeak. Rear discs are typically rusty.

Question is, is 1500 a good price, does seem to be....

Where all my moneys went.

save yourself the hassle with a repair on the wing and just find a good one and change them over

It's actually a 12 year corrosion warranty, but 99% of the time they'll just wash their hands of it claiming that it's a result of accident damage etc. rather than a manufacturing fault.

The b*****ds!

They agreed it was a common problem, and that they would sort it. When the paperwork came back from VW it was a no because I was over the 10 years....

Done 160k.

Drove it today. Needs a rear wheel bearing and there's a knock which I'm pretty sure is the dogbone but I'll double check.

It rattles a bit inside but is full of stuff so might be that. Gonna go in with a low offer and see what's said and just spend a couple hundred on it and chuck it at the GF. MFSW, cruise the lot which is nice!

I'd try £1350 if he won't move on price it's still a good car for £1500. My mates gt tdi is on over 200k and still pulls like a train. He's had no issues at all and does a good 70 mile a day round trip.  Have you shopped around for insurance? Depends on your age I suppose.

Offered 1300 he nicked another 50. 1350. Result.

Happy with it and will get bearings, wings etc done asap. Will leave the lipped discs for a bit they just make a load of noise after a long motorway run. Thinking just get carriers and 312 discs while I'm changing them can't see any reason not to if I want some decent wheels on it anyway.
