Yes they can work, they tend to make the car overfuel.

A proper remap if available is a much better bet.

What about a tuning box AND a remap?

Or is that not the point?

All tuning boxes do is play with one variable out of many, and that's fuel.  It's a crude way to get more power and by over fuelling you are forcing the engine to work hotter than it's designed to under normal load conditions.

A properly developed remap will adjust each map in relation to every other map..

There's no comparison really and I'm surprised people still buy tuning boxes.  We offer remaps now for as little as £199 on many older cars.

Most people will either not offer tuning for the Mk3 or its very high. Normally due to the fact they have to do something i.e remove the ECU and chip.

On modern car its just plug in, 5mins later "thats £200 pounds please".

Most quality tuning companies like ours will offer remaps for older ECU's on an ECU postal service basis so you can have them for a similar price to a tuning box, as long as you can remove the ECU and do without your car for a day or two while it's away.

As for your comments about it taking 2 minutes - yes to the customer it may seem a lot of money for a 5 minute ECU flash.  But you don't see the level of investment of time, money and repeat testing that goes into perfecting the maps.

Would you really care if a tuner spent 5 hours or 5 minutes, if the net result was the same to you?

Do you think a tuner that spends 5 hours on your car is going to do a better job than one who spends 5 minutes but is installing a remap that has been thoroughly tried and tested?

Answers on a postcard

I wouldn't of thought that you would carry a map for any old car.

When I had my GTI done I removed the ECU at the tuning shop and a new e-prom was flashed three times and then rolling roaded to give the most increase.

I was happy with the service and I retained my old e-prom so I can always return it to standard.

My TDI is next to go there when i fit the new injectors.
