Whats the difference?
« on: 13 July 2003, 19:06 »
I've put a deposit down on a 1.8T GTi and Im wondering how I can tell that it is the turbo version rather than the 1.8 20v none turbo?

Looking at the engine it says 20V, no mention of a turbo like on some other golfs I've seen?

Is there any way to confirm it is a turbo before I buy it?

drive it up the road if it gives you a kick up the ass its the turbo,  ;Dif it feels like the handbreak is on its not. i have a turbo and had it remaped by revo and now it not only kicks me up the ass but smacks me in the face to. Love it

Picking it up tomorrow!!!

On the test drive the salesman wouldnt let me boot it so i didn't really feel much of a kick...

how much of a kick should you get out of the turbo? i think there was
something there, but not as much as another turbo car i've been it.

with regard to looking at the manifold you cant really see anything cos the engines got a cover over it?

does anyone know if the car has a dump valve as standard?  my mate at work has a 2003 GTTDi and he says his came with one as standard?

Dead simple - OPEN THE WINDOW then when you accelerate you should here a whistling noise like a turbine sound on a plane. It should spin up just after you hit the accelerator, you don't need to boot it.

Every 20v Turbo i've seen has

                      VW

                20V TURBO

Written on the engine cover, and allso evergood has hit the nail on the head ;)

Shouldn't it say 1.8T on the cover of the engine when you have a look? My new golf does.

If you're buying the car from a garage then the saleman should let you drive it how you like, it'll be your car afterall!

If he won't let you then is he trying to hide something wrong with it?

Having looked into it,
the later models do have 1.8T on the engine cover and the earlier models have 20V TURBO on the engine cover
