Audi VDO guage fitment (again)
« on: 11 January 2009, 22:21 »
hello all.

I can work out how to power the VDO guages out of an audi and into my mk2.
Oil Pressure, Oil temp and Battery.

Do i need to use the audi oil pressure sensor (twin pole) or can i just splice into the mk2 wire?

same goes for the oil temp guage.

Can I connect and go or will this throw out my MFA readings?

thanks
:)

You can't splice because it mucks up your MFA - but you can just not plug in the MFA and run a single set of gauges.

There's a really thorough post on this somewhere, I was reading it the other day...

If i remember right you need the 180 deg temp sensor of the audi. This is fitted to the back of the head. You also need the oil pressure sensor. This is fitted to the top of the oil filter housing. About the same size as a camera film. best bet is to find an audi and get the bits off it

Another link http://42draftdesigns.com/tech.htm

There's a guy on ebay that sells vdo senders, haven't got the link though.

chers all

The sensor I have is 035 919 561. This goes onto the side of the head as its a low pressure sensor right?

So the audi sensor with 035 919 561A goes on the oil filter housing (replaces the high pressure sensor)

Now i need a 'T' piece for the extra oil temp sensor to the VDO.
That part number is: 049 919 563 A - Audi 180 degree sender

Right?

Another question
What oil pressure readings should I get? I did a small test today and was getting around 4bar on cold start then it settled to about 1.8bar when warm. When I revved the engine it went to 5bar.

Is this ok?

thanks
:)

yeah thats spot on.  the T piece is only needed if you want both the audi oil temp and MFA oil temp, if you only want the audi one then chuck the mfa sender into a box and fit the mfa one.  Problem with the audi one is it has a massive temp range, so 'up to temp' on a normal every day run is barely off the stop!

Thanks RJ

I did test VDO temp guage but I left it as the needle hardly moved off the end. I do want both to be working though

T Piece - What you recon to this?

that would do the job, but you need to confirm that the threads are M10x1

What if I want to run the oil temp on the MFA to be water temp (which I think I've worked out -just swapped the oil temp wire to the water temp)
BUT, I want to wire up the VDO's to oil temp/pressure so i don't need the T piece.

It's an Areg 8v, so I replaced the front sensor with the twin sender, but it doesn't move/read at all. The 2 wires from the gauges go where???

Do I put the pressure gauge wire to the OE pressure gauge? What happens with the oil pressure buzzer?
